Airport Overview

Des Moines International Airport (DSM) is a relatively small airport in Iowa. It is conveniently located just 3 miles (5km) from central Des Moines, and generally handles less than two million passengers per year.

In 2010, Des Moines International Airport’s terminal got a great revamp, which included new carpeting in the terminal and a number of other facility upgrades. The airport has a great array of shopping facilities, ranging from small-change vending machines to larger and more expensive options.

Passengers can book flights to Des Moines International Airport from destinations across the United States, including Chicago, Denver and Las Vegas. A number of airlines operate flights to Des Moines International Airport, particularly low-cost options such as ExpressJet Airlines and AirTran Airways.

Passengers who prefer smaller airports will enjoy Des Moines International Airport – as it has facilities of equal quality to those of larger airports, but not the crowds of people and the long queues generally associated with busier airports.

Passengers departing from the airport can choose from any of the conveniently-located parking lots and garages. There are two economy lots at Des Moines International Airport. The first economy lot is located next to the air terminal and Fleur Drive. Rates start at $2 per hour and $6 per day. A free shuttle service connects the economy parking lot to the airport via a paging system, which can be found in the shuttle waiting areas. Information Desks

The information desk is centrally located beside the food court in the terminal building. The information desk staff are helpful with questions about the airport, flights or tourist information about Des Moines and the surrounding area.

Airport Facilities

Money and communications: ATMs are easy to find in both the terminal and concourse areas. There is also a FedEx service available in the Capital City Gift Shop.

Luggage: Lost and found items can be reported at the Airport Administration office on the second floor of the main terminal building. Items left or lost on planes, as well as lost baggage, are dealt with by the airline involved.

Conference and business: A business center and meeting rooms are available at the airport. Business facilities include workstations, telephones, internet access and plug points. The business center can be found in Concourse A, and is open between 5am and 10pm. The meeting rooms and conference center can accommodate between two and 80 people. Full catering services are available, as is presentation equipment. The conference facilities are on the airport’s Skywalk level.

Shopping: Des Moines International Airport may be relatively small when compared with airports such as JFK in New York or Denver International, but it still boasts a great range of shopping options. Some of these include a florist (Doherty’s Flowers), clothing stores, newsstands and a gift shop. Frequent Fliers will be familiar with Paradies Gift Shops, which can be found in Des Moines International Airport as well as in other airports across North America. All in all, Des Moines has enough shops to keep passengers entertained while waiting for their boarding call.

Food and drink: Restaurants and bars available at the airport include Capital City Brew Pub, the Airside Food Court and Freidrich’s Coffee and Blended Frozen Drinks, which are all located past the security checkpoints in the concourse. Another branch of Freidrich’s is located before the security checkpoints, as is a Landside Food Court, a Pizza Hut and The American Grill. Passengers wishing to have a last drink with friends before taking off should head to the Landside Lounge, which also allows you to order meals from the grill if you’re feeling peckish. The food and drink restaurants at Des Moines International Airport tend to open between 4am and 6am, and closing times range from 7pm to 7.30pm, although many close earlier on Sundays.

Passengers wishing to use the Wi-Fi service will need to sign up with the service provider.
