Las Vegas Travel Guide

Blackjack tables, showgirls, neon lights and Elvis imitators – you can find it all when you book a flight to Las Vegas. Back in the day, Las Vegas served as the playground to everyone from Marilyn Monroe to the Rat Pack: Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis, Jr., Dean Martin, Peter Lawford and Joey Bishop. It’s where Elvis Presley first sang Viva Las Vegas in 1969, and where couples in love eloped and pressed their luck at the blackjack tables. Book an airline ticket to Las Vegas to see it all.

Vegas vacations start on the ride to Las Vegas. Upon booking Las Vegas flights, the odds are already in favor of having a good time. The plane lands at McCarran International Airport (LAS), where visitors are greeted by bright lights and the loud change-making noise of the slot machines – an inviting entrance into Sin City.

But when you step off your plane, you’ll see more than just gaming. The city boasts more churches per capita than any other city in America, which is no surprise since many Las Vegas flights are booked with the idea of matrimony in mind. Cheap plane tickets to Las Vegas can be found year-round, leaving tourists plenty of money to spend on hotels and entertainment in the city. And boy, are there a lot of hotels in Las Vegas. On the Las Vegas Strip, the most popular hotels include the Mirage, the Venetian, the Bellagio, the Hard Rock, Caesars Palace, the MGM Grand and Mandalay Bay, to name but a few. Budget-conscience travelers can find flights to Las Vegas and cheap hotels off the Strip, leaving a little extra room in the checkbook for loving the Las Vegas scene.

While the days of Elvis and Frank have ended, the Las Vegas legacy lives on. Today, Las Vegas flights open the gates to Broadway shows and Grammy-award winning entertainers. Luxury retail stores open daily along the Las Vegas Strip, and adults craving a lifestyle of decadence indulge in five-star restaurants and midnight buffets on the casino floor. Las Vegas has, and always will be, the heartbeat of the desert.

What happens here stays here, so once you board your return Las Vegas flight, you’re off the hook. Vegas is hopping 52 weeks a year, but certain Las Vegas events bring out the VIPs in full force. Jet-setters book Las Vegas flights to celebrate in style during holiday weekends, especially New Year’s Eve. Gamblers and sports fans find cheap Las Vegas airfare for the Super Bowl, Kentucky Derby and March Madness. Keep your eyes out during spring and summer weekends, when Las Vegas tickets are filled with bachelor and bachelorette parties starting their celebrations even before the plane touches down.

A world-class city, Las Vegas is the only place on earth where you can view a dazzling light show that takes in an entire street, take a ride in a gondola or see a volcano erupt, all in the same day. It’s also the place to see an Eiffel Tower and Sphinx without hopping on a plane. Beyond the glitz and the neon lights, there is plenty of nature to explore. There’s the Lake Mead Recreation Area, the Hoover Dam, and even the Grand Canyon is accessible via a fairly short helicopter ride. Whatever it is that brings you to the Sin City, we have some tips to help you plan and enjoy the smoothest possible trip.

Getting to and around the city of Las Vegas

When you arrive at McCarran International Airport, you’ll think the strip is so close you could walk there. This isn’t recommended and you’ll soon learn everything in Vegas seems quite close. The easiest and quickest option is to get a taxi straight from the airport – it shouldn’t take longer than thrity minutes – maybe less depending on where your hotel is and what the traffic is like.

You can also arrange for a limo to collect you if you want to ride in style, or at the other end of the spectrum you can take the shuttle bus. This might be the cheapest option but it makes many stops, so if you’d rather just get to your hotel and relax, take a taxi. You can also take a bus straight to the strip or rent a car, however unless you are planning to explore the outer areas of Las Vegas, a car could be more of a hindrance to your trip.

Once you’ve settled into your hotel and are ready to explore, it’s easiest to get around Vegas from the 4-mile-long Las Vegas Strip. Walking is a great way to get around Vegas, but it may not be the fastest. A monorail will take you from one end of the Vegas Strip to the other, and it runs all week long. Las Vegas’ public bus system also has buses running all day and night, and there are also trolleys you can take to get around too. Of course, you can always catch a taxi in front of any major hotel.

Tips for your stay in Las Vegas

  • Wondering what Las Vegas casino to hit first? Check out our Guide to Las Vegas Casinos before you hit the strip.
  • There are no closing hours in Las Vegas for the sale or consumption of alcohol, even on Sunday. It is legal to have an open container while walking on the Strip but you must be at least 21 to drink or gamble.
  • Malls and shopping centers with indoor rainstorms, animatronic gods, light shows and even a Grand Canal (in the Venetian) offer almost as much entertainment as the hotels.
  • Las Vegas hotels are always advertising deals for guests. Before booking your Las Vegas flights, check with specific hotels to see what rates and promotions they have during the time of your travel. In many cases, booking Las Vegas flights and hotels together is cheaper and more economical.
  • Don’t miss out on star-infused dining by top chefs. When booking Las Vegas flights and accommodations it’s possible for travelers to also receive vouchers to hotel casinos and restaurants.
  • After enjoying a late night meal, head to one of Las Vegas’ high-profile nightclubs. The major hotels and casinos all have a club or two you can spend a night in.
  • Helicopter tours of the Grand Canyon, Hoover Dam, and Las Vegas Strip depart every few minutes. Some are luxury affairs, with free limo upgrade and champagne picnic lunches.
  • A boat tour of Lake Mead will take you from the Hoover Dam to the entrance to the Grand Canyon and back.
  • Las Vegas has a wealth of museums! Be sure to visit some while taking in the glitz and glamour of the city.

Las Vegas, NV airport overview

Located five miles (8km) south of Las Vegas’s central business district, McCarran International Airport (LAS) is the largest airport serving the notorious Sin City, handling a whopping 40 million passengers each year.

Flights to Las Vegas McCarran International Airport come from all over the world. However, the most popular routes are short domestic flights from US cities such as Los Angeles, San Francisco, Denver, Phoenix, Chicago and Salt Lake City.

The facilities at McCarran are good, and staff members are friendly and efficient. The newer – and smaller – Terminal 2 has less to occupy your time and fewer places to sit, which can get annoying at peak times. Other than that there are few complaints to be made about the airport, so relax and try your luck at the slots while you wait for your flight.

  • What’s the weather like in Las Vegas?
