The Italian ski resort of Cervinia sits in the middle of the Breuil-Cervinia Valtournenche Zermatt district, and is one of the largest skiable areas in the Alps. From Cervinia you can ski in Italy and Switzerland, and across three valleys. Named after the Matterhorn (Monte Cervino in Italian), the resort is positioned high in the mountains. It’s situated at 2,725 feet and has lifts that take skiers as high as 12,800 feet. With 217 miles of runs and multiple lifts that carry you across the ski area, this is the perfect spot for skiers who don’t like to cover the same slope twice. The altitude, endless miles of skiing and the extensive après-ski are all reasons people come back to Cervinia.
Cervinia’s climate is cold and wet. There is significant rainfall year-round and temperatures can get as low as 6 F in the winter (December to February). The summer months from June to July don’t have traditional summer temperatures (26 to 41 F), but it makes for great ski weather year-round.
Due to the altitude, the winter season starts extremely early in Cervinia. As with most ski resorts Christmas, February and early Easter vacation (depending when Easter falls) are the most popular times of year. The resort also fills up on weekends, when Italian tourists flock in from Milan and Turin, but even during the peak time it can be less crowded during the weeks.
Skiing continues throughout the year in Cervinia, as summer skiing takes places on the glacier. Prices fall considerably during the summer months though.
Cervinia is about 70 miles from Turin Airport. Public buses travel from Turin to Cervinia and take about two hours, and ski taxis and mini buses for up to eight people are available too. Chatillon train station is 17 miles from Cervinia and coach transfers to the resort operate from the station.
Check the Cervinia website for a host of useful tools for skiers, including a downloadable pdf of the slope map, webcams of the resort and a snow report.
Most skiers who visit Cervinia are keen to ski over the top of the mountain into the neighboring Swiss resort of Zermatt. You can head over by chair lift. The journey is quite long, so be sure to leave enough time, so as not to get stranded on the wrong side. A taxi back, if you do, can be incredibly expensive.
