Alghero is a historic resort town on the Italian island of Sardinia. Its peak tourist season and hottest period is July and August when the population can more than double and, of course, prices for flights and accommodation soar. September is cooler and quieter and is a great time to visit as the city hosts the Sant Michele Festival of Light and Colour. The historical centre is turned into a theatre with concerts, exhibitions and food displays. Seafood lovers will find the Sea Urchin Festival in March very tempting. Temperature-wise it is comfortable to visit Alghero all year round but if wish to avoid the rain then don’t plan your visit between October and January.

Alghero overview

Alghero is a beautiful medieval city with its own unique character. Start your visit in the historic centre, which is also great to return to at night for its lively nightlife and selection of good restaurants. Surrounded on three sides by the old seawalls, built by the Spanish, and full of narrow cobbled streets the centre is ideal for those wandering holiday walks. It doesn’t matter if you get lost because you will always stumble upon something interesting around the next corner. Sardinia was once a Spanish colony and you will see evidence of this wherever you go – even restaurant menus are written in Catalan and Italian. It is pleasant to treat yourself to some Italian pastries and have a picnic in the pretty Giardini Pubblicci, a refreshing green space amongst the buildings. If you have an interest in history, climb the 14th century Torre Porta a Terra, one of the old gate towers, and explore its small multimedia museum which documents the city’s past. Climb a bit higher to get fantastic panoramic views across the city and yacht filled marina. In the evenings enjoy a cocktail whilst watching the sunset from a bar on one of the sea walls, Bastioni Marco Polo or Bastioni Cristoforo Colombo. Both names are evocative of the island’s past.

Getting around Alghero

Alghero has a good bus network making it easy to visit the beaches or explore further afield. Tickets are very good value and can be bought at most tobacconists. If you are feeling adventurous bicycles and scooters can be hired by the day. Alghero is relaxing for drivers, if you have hired a car, but you might find parking spaces in short supply. A great idea for a day out is to take a boat trip to Cappo Caccia and visit Neptune’s Grotto, one of over 300 submerged caves in the area, where you can enjoy a guided tour inside this beautiful cavern.

Getting from the Airport to the City

Alghero is served by Fertilia Airport (AHO) which is conveniently situated just 6 miles (10 km) north of the town. Eight public buses a day shuttle back and forth between the airport and the main square. This is a cheaper option than the rather expensive taxis. Major and local car hire companies also operate from the airport.
