Peak season:
You’ll find cheap flights to Austria hard to come by for many different periods of the year. June, for example, is full of festivals and events, such as the KitzAlp Bike Festival in the middle of June. Due to this you’ll need to secure your flight tickets well in advance to find the cheapest flights to Austria during the event season. The peak months of summer are also more expensive as tourists flood the country, so July, August and September can be very busy. Unsurprisingly parts of winter are also very busy due to winter sports. The Alps in-particular become very crowded as the snow covered mountain range becomes home to skiers and snow enthusiasts between December and February. Finding an Austria cheap flight may prove to be difficult if you’re planning on traveling over Christmas, Easter, or the summer months, as these are Austria’s most popular travel months.
Off season:
With more moderate temperatures easing into or out of the frigid winter cold, the end of fall and the beginning of spring tend to be the least popular times to visit. The weather is still pleasant, however, it isn’t as appealing to a lot of tourists who prefer either hot sun or cold snow. and, therefore, it’s the best time to find cheap flights to Austria.
VIE Temperature | 33.8 - 71.6 °F |
---|
If weather is an important factor for your trip to Austria, use this chart to help with planning. For those seeking warmer temperatures, July is the ideal time of year to visit, when temperatures reach an average of 71.6 F. Travelers looking to avoid the cold should look outside of January, when temperatures are typically at their lowest (around 33.8 F).
Deciding when is the best time to book your flights to Austria depends a lot on where you plan to visit. Vienna for example is busy most of the year however with some forward planning you can find deals. Aim to have your flight tickets booked at least 3 months before you want to travel, and if it makes sense with your travel plans, aim for the quieter times of the year such as spring. If you have no preference on your dates or where in Austria you’ll be visiting then you’ll find the cheapest flights to Austria, with many airlines competing for the best priced flight tickets. If your flights to Austria take you to Vienna, then try to sit on the right hand side of the plane for the best views, however either side should offer stunning views as you approach.

Vienna:
The airport in Vienna, or the Schwechat Airport, is about 12 miles away from the center of the city. You can find your way pretty easily by taking the City Airport Train, otherwise known as CAT. The train runs every 30 minutes from 6am until 11:30pm every day. It’s non-stop and takes around 15 minutes, making it an ideal way to get to the Wien Mitte station in the center of Vienna. Another option is to take the bus. Vienna Airport Lines operates buses from the airport to several different areas of the city. Again the buses run every 30 minutes from 6am until midnight so you’ll be covered for most of the day, regardless of when your flights to Austria land. Lastly you can opt for a taxi. They are a lot more expensive than the bus or train services however they are convenient if you don’t want to wait for the public transport or if you have a fair amount of baggage.
Salzburg:
Salzburg International Airport is merely 2 miles away from the city center, making it incredibly easy to get into the city. The most common method of transport is via bus. Bus lines 2, 8 and 27 regularly operate to downtown Salzburg. Each bus line goes a different route so it’s worth looking into which route will work best for you once your flights to Austria land in Salzburg. Another option is to hail a taxi. You’ll find them outside of the arrivals area of the airport, however, it is still considerably more than a bus.
Domestic Austria flights are available from Austrian Airlines and Tyrolean Airways.
The train service is extremely efficient and the network is extensive. All trains are comfortable and fast and it is unlikely that you will not be able to find a service to your destination. In some parts of the Alps, old steam trains are available for transportation between resorts. This is a slower way of travelling, but the views are spectacular.
For short trips take the bus, called the Bundesbus.
In the Alps, travel up the mountains is by cable cars, gondolas and ski lifts. Many stay open in the summer for hikers.
When it’s time to hit the road and head out of Vienna for the next leg of your journey, use the Cheapflight “find deals” tool.
