With a booming tourist industry, Taipei is loved for its vibrant past and stunning natural beauty. As well as being Taiwan’s political and financial center, this fascinating city is home to over 5,000 temples and one of the world’s tallest skyscrapers – the Taipei 101. Visitors to this city are presented with a vast array of sites and activities – try your hand at scuba diving in its clear blue waters, indulge in the delicious Asian cuisine or relax after a long day of sightseeing in one of the many hot thermal springs. As the city capital, Taipei is naturally bustling with business and energy. Explore the city’s expansive mall that is home to hundreds of stylish boutiques, restaurants and bars – or simply enjoy the impressive architecture and the works of art displayed outside. If it’s art you’re after then the National Palace Museum is an absolute must. Featuring nearly 700,000 works of art and Chinese artifacts, be prepared to spend a good few hours exploring them all! Liberty Square is also a great option if you’re on the hunt for the city’s major landmarks. Here you’ll find the National Concert Hall, the Presidential Office Building and the National Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall – all surrounded by well-kept recreational gardens and ponds full of colorful koi. For those looking to experience an oasis of tranquillity, venture out of the city and into the beautiful countryside where you’ll find awe-inspiring scenery and postcard perfect beaches for finding some rest and relaxation.
As a city that never sleeps, Taipei welcomes visitors every day of the year. However if you’re looking to plan your visit outside of the city’s hottest and most humid months then try to avoid June, July and August and opt instead for September onwards when temperatures are much cooler. If you find yourself in this vibrant city at New Year, don’t miss out on the renowned fireworks display taking place from the Tapei 101 building. As the countdown begins, each floor of this impressive skyscraper will be lit up one by one before a fantastic display of fireworks from the top signals that a new year has begun.
With a comprehensive metro and bus system, visitors will find all of Taipei’s famous sites and attractions right at their fingertips. Another option for getting around is the iconic Maokong Gondola, which runs between the city’s zoo and the suburb of Maokong. Aside from helping you get from A to B, the Gondola is a fantastic opportunity to do some sightseeing from above and take in some breathtaking scenery.
Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport (TPE) is the 13th busiest airport in the world, and Taiwan’s largest airport, serving more than 25 million passengers annually. It is located in Taoyuan County, about 25 miles (40 km) south-west of Taipei.
Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport has two terminals that are linked by Skytrain people movers. Currently under construction and due for completion in 2013, the MRT rapid transit system will link both terminals as well as provide quick transport to the city of Taipei. Numerous duty-free stores are located in both terminals, as well as a host of dining and drinking venues that cater to both eastern and western palettes.
Overall, Taiwan Taoyuan International is a comfortable and clean airport with friendly and helpful staff. The terminal buildings are uniquely appealing to the eye, as numerous plants adorn public areas and natural light filters through the windows. Better yet, queues move quickly and procedures like security checks and baggage claims are a breeze.
