Fresno may not be the largest city in California, but its airport serves as a vital gateway to what I believe are some of the state’s most breathtaking natural wonders. Fresno Yosemite International Airport (FAT) is the primary hub for travelers heading to Yosemite National Park, Sequoia National Park and Kings Canyon National Park, making it a popular choice for outdoor enthusiasts and adventure seekers.

Despite its modest size, the airport efficiently handles a steady stream of visitors, especially during peak travel seasons when nature lovers like me flock to the region. If you’re planning a trip to California’s stunning national parks, here’s what you need to know to navigate FAT with ease and start your adventure on the right foot.

Arriving at the airport

Arriving at Fresno Yosemite International Airport (FAT) is usually a breeze, but there are a few tips to help keep your travel day stress-free. The airport may be small, but it can get busy, especially early in the morning between 4 am and 6 am, and again from 10 am to 2 pm. I always recommend arriving about 2 hours before your flight, particularly if you need to check bags or park.

Getting to and from FAT by public transportation

Public transportation is not the strong suit of this area, but there are still a few options to get you to and from the airport.

The Fresno Area Express (FAX) bus system offers a budget-friendly way to travel. While it does not have a stop directly at the airport, Route 26 stops about a 5- to 10-minute walk from the terminal. If you’re heading beyond Fresno, there aren’t direct buses from the airport to places like Yosemite.

You can take a short taxi ride to the Fresno Amtrak Station instead, where you can connect to trains and buses that will get you closer to your destination. Since public transportation in Fresno is mainly designed for local commuters, it might be more convenient to opt for a taxi, rideshare or a shuttle service directly from the airport if you’re traveling with a lot of luggage or in a group.

Getting to and from FAT by car

If I am in town for a quick business trip and need to get to downtown Fresno from the airport, I usually opt for a taxi or a rideshare. It’s the quickest and most straightforward option, taking about 15 minutes. Taxis, airport shuttles and limos can be found downstairs in Zone A.

If I’m planning to explore the area during my stay, I rent a car. The rental car center is just a short walk from the terminal, making it easy to pick up your car right after you land. The staff there are always efficient, so you can be on your way in no time – no fuss, no waiting around.

Renting a car at FAT is one of the smoother rental experiences I’ve had at an airport, and it definitely beats having to navigate shuttle buses or suffer long waits at other places. Driving to and from FAT is pretty straightforward. The airport is conveniently located near major highways like 180, 168 and 41, making it easy to access various parts of Fresno and beyond.

If you want to take a shuttle to Visalia or Fresno, check out V-LINE. The shuttle has 6 daily trips starting at 4 am. The shuttles are comfortable with free Wi-Fi, USB charging ports and plenty of storage for your bags. The V-LINE drops you off at the center island outside the departures area, near the YARTS pick-up spots. Just look for the orange and blue sign, and you’re all set.

The V-LINE can be found at Zone B, as can rideshare pickups from companies like Lyft and Uber.

Security lines

The security checkpoint is located on the upper level behind the check-in counters in the main terminal. The airport has 1 primary security checkpoint to handle all departing passengers as well as TSA PreCheck lanes for those enrolled. The setup is designed to be straightforward, with clear signage guiding you from the entrance through to the gates, so you won’t have to worry about getting confused along the way.

While security can get crowded during peak travel times, the lines usually move fairly quickly. I’ve found that even without TSA PreCheck, most travelers can get through security in around 30 minutes or less. With PreCheck, I haven’t waited more than 15 minutes here.

As a tip, if you’re flying during peak times, like early morning, it’s still a good idea to arrive at least 2 hours before your flight to ensure you have enough time to get through security without rushing. For those looking for even faster screening, the airport also offers CLEAR. Global Entry services are available for expediting immigration processing on arrival from international flights, too.

Stores at the airport

Need something before your flight? FAT has you covered with 3 Hudson News stores scattered around the airport. I always make a point to swing by one of these stores before my flight – inevitably I am in need of a snack or water for the journey.

These shops also have a great selection of souvenirs and regional gifts, which is perfect if you need to pick up something for friends or family. And, of course, I can never resist browsing through their magazines and best-sellers for some in-flight reading.

Dining at the airport

Being such a small airport, FAT doesn’t offer a ton of dining options. However, you’ll find enough to satisfy your pre-flight cravings.

If you’re looking for a sit-down meal, Tap & Pour is the spot. Grab some nachos and a beer – like one of the Mad Duck selections on tap – and catch a game on TV before you board. The beer selection is decent, and they’ve got a solid specialty cocktail list if you’re in the mood for something stronger.

If you just need a quick snack or caffeine fix, there’s a Starbucks before security and a Peet’s Coffee once you’re through. For those in a rush, as I tend to be before an early morning flight, both coffee shops have grab-and-go quick bites that you can take with you.

Art at FAT

Have some time to kill before your flight? Fresno Yosemite International Airport might surprise you with its artsy side. Thanks to the Arts & Culture program, the terminal is more than just a place to catch a plane – it’s a vibrant showcase of contemporary art that highlights the rich diversity of California’s Central Valley.

The airport typically hosts 3 or 4 art installations a year. As you wander through, you’ll encounter creative pieces of artwork that make waiting for your flight a bit more interesting.

Airport amenities

FAT may be small, but it’s packed with convenient amenities that make traveling a breeze. Need some cash? You’ll find an ATM tucked behind the Starbucks kiosk in the terminal lobby, perfect for grabbing a few bills before you head through security.

If your phone’s running low, don’t worry – charging stations are scattered throughout the terminal, with a handy spot right at the bottom of the escalator in the Arts Lounge.

For those traveling with little ones, there’s a Mother’s Room post-security that has comfortable seating and soft lighting for a quiet moment. The airport also has a Companion Care Restroom pre-security, ideal for travelers who need caregiver assistance, and a pet relief area for your furry travel companions.

If you’re looking to stay connected, the airport offers free Wi-Fi throughout the terminal, so you can catch up on emails or stream your favorite show while you wait.

Bring your water bottle and refill it at one of the bottle filling stations throughout the terminal to stay hydrated for free. And for any last-minute questions, the Information Center is staffed by friendly volunteers from the HandsOn Central California Retired Senior Volunteer Program, ready to assist with maps, tourism brochures or just some good advice.
