Because there are no direct flights from the United States to Myanmar, the journey is longer than many expect. Typically, it is going to average at 8h 25m but is usually longer due to the fact that one or more stopovers are required during the flight. The most common airlines making the flight include Emirates, All Nippon Airways or ANA, and Singapore Airlines.
There are no nonstop or direct flights, however, departures from the United States are possible on the three main carriers flying into Myanmar on a regular basis. Emirates is the biggest carrier to Myanmar, and it has flights departing from Boston’s Logan International Airport, Chicago’s O’Hare, Dallas’ International Airport, Houston’s George Bush Intercontinental Airport, and LAX in Los Angeles, among others. ANA has departures from LAX, Honolulu, Washington DC’s Dulles and JFK in New York.
Myanmar has only recently had sanctions lifted and it is actively developing its infrastructure. Because of this, roads and travel can feel a bit impeded by the lack of accessible roads and bridges. Travel to some areas remains prohibited or requires special permissions. It is wise to hire a guide to ensure a journey remains safe and legal. The most common areas, such as Mandalay, Bagan, Rangoon, and Inle Lake are safe and open to foreign visitors. This makes air travel a preferred form of domestic transportation, though some trains are available and are quite slow and costly. River ferries may be the smartest way to travel and do some sightseeing. Buses are also an affordable option.
Spiritual tourism is a mainstay of things to see and do in Myanmar. There are many gorgeous pagodas, temples, and sites that see enormous crowds every year. There are also gorgeous beaches in some of the coastal areas, and with the tropical climate, some trekking in the jungles is possible. The primary hotspot for travelers is Bagan, the capital and a place full of archaeological sites. A visit to Mandalay Palace is a must, as is a day spent in the mountains at Inle Lake. Beach goers will also love both Ngapali Beach and Ngwesaung Beach. If stunning pagodas are on the agenda, it is Shwedagon Pagoda, or the Golden Pagoda, that is a must on any sightseeing list.
Tourist visas are required for all travelers entering Myanmar, and a visa is only valid for three months from the date it is issued. A visit to Myanmar can be only 28 days in total from the date of arrival, and no visa extensions are allowed. A visa requires an Arrival Form and a visa sticker, and that both have the signature of an immigration officer from the embassy of origin. Customs forms are also required. E-Visas and visas on arrival are available to U.S. citizens.
