Kavala overview

Nestled on the slopes of Mount Symvolo, the city of Kavala in northern Greece is a picturesque port with an incredible history. Dating as far back as the 7th Century BC, Kavala was once called Neapolis, a colony founded by the Thassians. Modern Kavala offers a stunning array of historic sites and museums to explore, with treasures that date back to the city’s Roman, Byzantine and Ottoman periods. The Old Town of Kavala is best explored on foot and there is even a tourist train that runs from the central square. Amongst the main historical sites, you will find Kavala Castle located on a hill, which dates back to 1425. The castle offers stunning views over the city. Another major reason tourists take flights to Kavala is to see one of the city’s most famous  landmarks, the Kamares, a Roman aqueduct near Nikotsara Square that dates back to the 16th Century. In the Old Town square, you can visit the House of Muhammad Ali, the founder of the last Egyptian dynasty. Other noteworthy architectural features include the Town Hall, a Hungarian building built around 1895, the Tokos Mansion, which dates back to 1879, and The Imaret, an example of Islamic architecture from the late Ottoman period. If you want to see some of the antiquities from ancient Kavala, take a visit to the Archaeological Museum of Kavala, which is considered to be one of the most important in Greece.
