Unfortunately, travelers will often have to make one or more stops on their way to the island. One of the most popular cities to depart from in the United States is Philadelphia. The flight from Philadelphia to Port-au-Prince averages 12h and 12m. The cheapest Haiti flight deals often require multiple layovers, so pay attention to this when calculating your travel time.
When flying to Haiti, there are quite a few major United States cities that offer flights directly to the country. The most common city to fly into is Port-au-Prince. From the United States, travelers can take a direct flight from cities like New York, Miami, and Fort Lauderdale. Boston and Atlanta also offer flights directly to Port-au-Prince.
Depending on where visitors are in Haiti, there are various options for getting around. In Port-au-Prince and Cap-Haïtien, one of the best bets is to hop on a taxi, or publique. These are often denoted by a red ribbon hanging on the front mirror. Publiques charge about $0.70 USD as a set fare, and take set routes throughout the city. Moto-taxis are a faster way to get around, and are not much more expensive than publiques. One drawback is safety. Renting a car isn’t typically recommended in Haiti, as driving is not for those without nerves of steel. Truly the best travel around the cities in Haiti is on publiques.
Located on the island of Hispaniola, which it shares with its neighbor to the east, the Dominican Republic, Haiti offers rich culture and beautiful landscapes for travelers of all ages. Having survived a massive hurricane and still with many undeveloped areas, Haiti is a bit of a diamond in the rough of the Greater Antilles. One of the main draws for this area is the beaches. Gelee Beach and Jacmel Bay both offers visitors crystal clear water and long stretches of stand. Jacmel Bay features gorgeous Blue Waterfalls and offers boat tours for those who want to get close. Rich cultural heritage abounds in cities like Port-au-Prince, Labadee, and Cap-Haitien. The Citadelle Fortress & San Souci Palace from Port-au-Prince offers rich history for visitors. For those looking to imbibe, the Barbancourt Rum Distillery in Pourt-au-prince offers distilled rum and tours. Shopping is also plentiful throughout the island, with the El-Saieh Gallery topping the list.
