There were a lot of delays. Not sure if they could be helped, but it made me super nervous about catching my already tight connection. The connection was held for me, but I had to really hurry to make it.

There are quite a few airports located within 100 miles of Montrose, CO, including Grand Junction Regional Airport (GJT), Aspen/Pitkin County Airport (ASE), and Durango-La Plata County Airport (DRO). It might be worth considering flying into one of these airports just to keep your options open. But the best option of all will no doubt be Montrose Regional Airport (MTJ), which is a small non-towered public airport that routinely fields flights from throughout the country operated by airlines like American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, and United Airlines. MTJ is less than 3 miles from the center of Montrose and will be the perfect place to land when you’re visiting.
The majority of the flights that come into Montrose, CO will force you to make at least one stop while you’re on the way. There are, however, some direct flights that are available from airports on the East Coast like Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR). United Airlines, in particular, provides non-stop flights from EWR to Montrose Regional Airport that will only take a little over 5 hours. Otherwise, you will need to settle for one-stop flights out of airports like John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) or LaGuardia Airport (LGA) that will take between 7 and 8 hours since they’ll include layovers at airports like Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport (DFW).
At right around 18 square miles, Montrose is far from the biggest city in Colorado. But many of the places that you’ll want to visit while you’re in town are spread out throughout the city, so you may want to think about renting a car at the start of your trip. Budget, Enterprise Rent-A-Car, and Hertz all have locations at Montrose Regional Airport that you can take advantage of when you would like to rent a car for a few days. You might automatically assume that you’ll need to rent an SUV in Montrose in the winter since it does snow in the city regularly. But Montrose is situated in the Uncompahgre Valley, so it only gets about 20 inches of snow each year on average. This will make it possible for you to rent almost any kind of vehicle you would like from a car rental agency.
