Being situated on the Plains of Nebraska, the town can experience very cold winters, and most travellers will want to avoid the months between December and March. The ideal time to visit is in the summer season. Between May and September, the sun beats down and all of the outdoor activities will be at their best. However, autumn is another great time to go, with a vibrant city festival taking place in October.
With its blend of historical sites, quirky art exhibits, relaxing parks and outdoor activities, Alliance, Nebraska is a fantastic destination for a family holiday.
The town is home to one of the Mid-West’s most spectacular attractions, in the form of Carhenge – a replica of Stonehenge made entirely from obsolete car parts. But there is more to Alliance than the eccentricity of its artists. At the heart of town, visitors can relax next to the Central Park Fountain, and the town also hosts a wonderfully laid out steam train museum.
History is a huge attraction as well, and visitors can learn all about the town’s frontier past at the fascinating Knight Museum, with exhibits on wagon trains, Native American life and the harsh reality of the frontier. There is also a superbly reconstructed 19th century neighbourhood at Dobby’s Frontier Town.
Watch a drive-in movie at Sandhills, catch some of the artistic creations of Nebraska’s people at the Carnegie Arts Centre or see a show at the town’s excellent theatre. At any time of year something will be going on in central Alliance.
Outside town, the attractions are endless. Play a round of golf at Skyview Golf Course, splash around in the sunshine at Big Blue Bay Pool, hone your accuracy at the rifle range or enjoy a spot of fishing at Box Butte Reservoir, which is also a water sports centre.
No matter how active you want to be, Alliance is a town which offers all that families will need to have a great time. From plays and art to wholesome country cooking, historical sites and exciting sporting activities, there is something to delight anyone who takes cheap flights to Alliance.
The city is compact and easy to navigate, and the city centre is walkable. The terrain is also very flat, making cycling an option. Maps of the countryside trails around Alliance can be picked up from most hotels as well. However, to see the surrounding countryside and explore fishing or water sports activities, a rental car may be essential.
Anyone taking flights to Alliance Municipal Airport (AIA) will find it easy to reach their hotel or the central district after touching down. There is a public transport option, but visitors need to call in advance to ensure that they are picked up. Alternatively, taxis can be booked before flying, and car rental can be organised from the terminal.
