• Like Granada and Córdoba, Seville’s history as a former Moorish stronghold is proudly displayed by its well-preserved ruins and the influence of Islamic architecture. Two of Seville’s most popular attractions, the Torre del Oro (“Tower of Gold”) and the Alcazar, were constructed by the Moors as part of their fortress and fortification. The Cathedral of Seville, which is the largest in Spain and the third largest cathedral in the world, is unique in that it also credits the architectural influence of the Moors. The Almohad Mosque was demolished so that the cathedral could be built on its grounds, and the minaret from the mosque, known as La Giralda, is the only remnant of the original structure that was incorporated into the construction of the cathedral.
