I traveled with my 82 y/o mother, who has serious difficulties walking. I purposely booked an aisle seat where she would have extra room to stretch her legs. The aisle was so narrow that my mother could not sleep because she got bumped by anyone walking by her. The crew was sweating, and looked extremely overwhelmed, not a single smile. Our seats were very close to 1st class, but the bathrooms were located all the way in the back. Trying to get to the bathroom walking that narrow aisle was a nightmare. Especially when they were serving the meals, which meant we had to hold it until all passengers had been served. I went to the crew galley closest to me to ask a soda and some ice, and was told I had to go aaaaalll the way to be end of the plane to get them. When I finally made it to the back and asked for a cup with ice, the hostess said: "I hope you are not drinking alcohol"(????). She must have noticed my confused look, so she proceeded to explain that she is used to passengers bringing in outside alcohol and then asking for ice. She further explained that bringing outside alcohol was not allowed. Such disrespectful assumption. The worst: upon landing in Madrid, at around 5:30am, there was no wheelchair waiting for my mother. We were told by the crew to wait on the empty plane because they had requested the chair. We waited a long time. Finally the crew told my mother and I that we might as well start walking, otherwise we would miss our connecting flight to Malaga. The airport was empty, no one to ask for directions. We were getting desperate, until we got to a hall where everyone was running in the same direction. We followed them, my mother limping and in pain. We got to an area where an airport employee was screaming to a very large group of people, but we were so far we could not hear. We just followed the group, and begged a security officer to let us through the line b/c of my mother's pain. We had walked for almost 30 minutes in a hot airport. Madrid takes pride on his huge airport, but they do not have the staff to manage it. I could not believe we were in a EU airport. We were the last ones to board the plane to Malaga. A true nightmare, will definitely try to avoid flying Iberia ever again.

Nestled between the Mediterranean Sea and the Cabo de Gata natural park, the Spanish city of Almeria is an inspired holiday choice.  Filled with points of interest such as the Cathedral and the Alcazaba, the town is a blend of great beaches, history and culture.  The city also has a wonderful climate and enjoys the warmest winters in Europe.

The Alcazaba dates from the 10th century and the fortified castle looms over the town from its hilltop perch.  It’s one of the most visited historic locations in the city, and you’ll enjoy fantastic panoramic views over the sea as you stroll in the beautiful courtyards and gardens within its impressive walls.

Gorgeous beaches are a feature of this part of the Spanish coastline and some of the finest are to be found within the Cabo de Gata natural park, an area of outstanding natural beauty.  Relax on the city’s main beach – an impressive stretch of sand backed by luxury apartments which overlook the Mediterranean, or explore Cabo de Gata beaches like Playa de Torre Garcia, Playa de las Amoladeras or Playa de San Miguel.

Parts of the city and the surrounding countryside have been used as locations for many famous films.  Fans will enjoy spotting places used in movies like David Lean’s 1962 epic, Lawrence of Arabia and the films of Sergio Leone which made great use of the region’s unique landscape.

The Cathedral is a must for history enthusiasts, and its fortified appearance was designed to repel pirate raids in the 16th century.  You can find out more about the city’s amazing history and culture by visiting the Museum of Almeria where you’ll see exhibits from every age of the city’s development.

Relax with a cool drink on the beach, or sample Almerian cuisine in the many friendly tapas bars and restaurants.  There is something to appeal to everyone in this historic and beautiful city, and its exceptional climate makes it a great year round resort.
