With so much to offer visitors every month of the year, Leipzig is the ideal place for winter getaways or summer holidays.

For many the best time to travel to Leipzig is during the summer season, when visitors can bask in the afternoon sunshine after a day of sightseeing. During the warmest month of July, temperatures peak at 25 degrees Celsius. Taking a flight to Leipzig during this time however does have a few drawbacks. The city will be at its busiest, hotel rates and airfares are likely to be at their most expensive and it is also the wet season. Don’t let the rain put a dampener on your trip though you’ll find plenty of shops, restaurants and attractions to dive into when there’s a drizzle.

Alternatively visit Leipzig in December to enjoy the iconic Christmas Market, which is one of the largest and most beautiful in Germany. Get into the festive spirit, pick up gifts for loved ones and enjoy seasonal entertainment, including daily trumpet fanfares and concerts.

If you’re after a budget break then look for a cheap flight to Leipzig between March and May. Temperatures will be getting steadily warmer from lows of around 1 degree in March to highs around 19 degrees in May. This can also be a great time to explore the city when it is less crowded.

City overview

The German city of Leipzig has been attracting visitors for centuries – once thanks to its reputation as a centre of trade, today for its historic charm. Thought to have been founded a staggering 1,000 years ago, the city is home to one of the oldest universities in Europe. Located 93 miles (150km) south of Berlin, Leipzig boasts an impressive musical scene having once welcomed famous composers such as Schumann and Mendelssohn. Visitors to the city will find several impressive buildings and monuments all within walking distance of one another. Take a trip to the home of the Leipzig orchestra at the Gewandhaus concert hall and then on to the stunning Town Hall (Rathaus), which takes pride of place in the Market Square in the centre of the city. It is also recommended to dedicate a bit of time to marvel at some of the beautiful places of worship such as St. Thomas Church (Thomaskirche) and St. Nicholas Church (Nikolaikirche). Those on flights to Leipzig in search of some retail therapy will be well served by the clusters of independent boutiques and stylish department stores dotted along the city’s pedestrianised passageways. A favourite haunt of both local and visiting shopaholics is the historic Madler Passage. Here visitors can enjoy both a rich selection of shopping opportunities and the beautiful period architecture before stopping for a bite to eat in one of the quaint cafes or restaurants in the area. Visitors looking to escape the city’s charming hustle and bustle should consider a trip to the Botanical Gardens. The gardens, which are open every day, offer visitors the chance to take in a vast array of different plant species. Ideal for taking a relaxed walk through in the afternoons, the Botanical Gardens are free of charge and well worth a visit for those with green fingers!
