Can I fly to Stornoway right now?

There are currently restrictions on flights to Stornoway along with the rest of United Kingdom. Before you book or search for flights, consider the following restrictions: Entry restrictions

The United Kingdom has reimposed national lockdown. From January 4, National lockdown in England is in effect. Traveling away from home, including internationally, is restricted from England except in limited circumstances such as for work or for education. Foreign nationals are subject to the ‘Stay at Home’ regulations. They should not travel abroad unless it is permitted. Different rules apply in Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland. Travelers must follow all the rules that apply to them. From November 20, Scotland restricted cross-border travels within the UK, only essential travels—which includes health reasons, work and for study—will be allowed to enter and leave Scotland. People living within Level 3 or Level 4 lockdown areas in Scotland are also not permitted to leave their area, and banned from traveling overseas, though people in Level 0-2 are not. Travelers who have been in or transited through South Africa in the past 10 days are not allowed to enter The United Kingdom with the exception of British nationals, nationals of Ireland, residents of the UK. Entry requirements

All travelers entering the United Kingdom must present a completed "Public Health Passenger Locator Form" to immigration upon arrival.

Quarantine requirements

The UK government is updating a list of countries from which arriving travelers will not be required to self-isolate upon arrival, unless they’ve visited or stopped in any other country or territory in the preceding 14 days. The United Kingdom announced a mandatory 14-day quarantine for all travelers which started on June 8. Freight workers, medical professionals traveling to help with the fight against coronavirus, and travelers arriving from Ireland, the Channel Islands and the Isle of Man are exempt from the quarantine requirement. Note: The English, Scottish, Welsh, and Northern Irish governments may be applying quarantine requirements differently. All travelers on flights to the UK must wear face coverings on aircraft and on public transport upon arrival thereafter. Passengers using taxis and private hire vehicles should also use a face covering for the duration of their journey. When is the best time to fly to Stornoway?

Peak Season:

The peak season takes place during the Scottish summer months of July to September and is the most popular time to book a flight to Stornoway. Stornoway does not receive as many visitors as the mainland, however the lower number of hotels may mean that room prices are high due to their limited capacity. The area is quite popular for music events, attracting both local and international acts, as well as festivals such as the Autumn Leaf Peepin treks and walks, and the Tiree Music Festival.

Off Season:

October to January are the winter months, and will see very few visitors thanks to the harsh winter. However, the benefit of these severe weather conditions is that many cheap flights to Stornoway are available during this period.

Shoulder Season:

From March to June, the climate begins to improve and the festival season begins to pick up pace. Festivals and events during this period include the Highlands & Islands Music & Dance Festival, as well as the Scottish Series sailing event. Stornoway overview

Stornoway is a Scottish city located on the Isle of Lewis, and is one of the most northern settlements in the UK. The Isle has a rich history, and the city itself was founded by the Vikings in the 9th century. Much of the city and surrounding area is steeped in history, cultural landmarks, modern attractions and festivals.

There is something to appeal to all visitors taking a flight to Stornoway, although the area will have a greater appeal to those with a love of Scottish scenery, history, and cultural festivals. Arnoal Blackhouse is an outdoor museum and authentic look into the early settlement of the Isle. The impressive late middle ages Lews Castle is open to visitors, and also includes an art gallery.

The large harbour area has plenty of local seafood restaurants and bars, and there are plenty of local and family owned businesses in the surrounding streets which cannot be found anywhere else. Stornoway promises to offer many unique experiences and a small town atmosphere which is a welcome change to many visitors from the metropolitan areas.

Getting around Stornoway

The city, and the rest of the Isle, is quite small, so is possible to reach many of the points of interest by foot. There are small taxi firms available, as well as a local shuttle bus service to get to some of the more out of the way attractions.

Getting from the Airport to the City

The closest airport serving flights to Stornoway is Inverness Airport (INV), however it will be necessary to travel by ferry to the Isle of Lewis. If taking a ferry from Inverness, the trip will take several hours, however a City Link bus to Skye, and then a ferry, will take approximately the same amount of time.
