Air travel is a quick and straightforward way to travel around Iraq, ideal for long-distance trips between cities. Domestic flights link the major cities, including Erbil, Basra, and Baghdad. Iraq also has a railway system connecting Basra to Baghdad. The train runs one time every day. A convenient way to travel around is by car however, by bus is less expensive.
Iraq offers several tourist attractions, such as the Ishtar Gate, the Tower of Babel art museum, the Ziggurat of Ur, and the Iraq Museum in Baghdad. If you’re visiting Erbil, Sami Abdulrahman Park or Shanadar Park provides a nice destination for taking walks, or enjoying a picnic. These attractions feature restaurants, a pond and, play areas for children. Depending on your desired location, other activities in Iraq may include wildlife excursions, river boat rides, and cave tours. In addition, the country hosts interesting festivals like the Iraqi short film festival, the Assyrian New Year, and Baghdad’s Summer Festival.
In order to fly to Iraq, you will need a visa issued in advance. You will also need a passport that has been valid for at least six months from the date the visa was issued. If your plans include a visit to Iraqi Kurdistan, you can get a visa on arrival at Erbil International Airport or Sulaymaniyah International Airport. If you choose to do this, the visa is only valid for that region and is not valid for travel into other areas of the country. Single entry visas are good for up to three months and multi-entry visas are good for up to a year.
