The official currency in Malta is the euro. ATMs, exchange bureaus and banks are located everywhere. Foreign currency is often accepted at hotels, restaurants and shops, and you can change money at the airport any time of day. Major credit cards are usually accepted at most hotels and restaurants and many shops.
Malta’s international country code is 356. To call another country from Malta, dial 00 followed by the appropriate country code. You can make international and local calls from hotel rooms, and most hotels have faxing and Internet capabilities. Main towns and tourist resorts all have Internet cafes.
Hotels expect 15 percent tips while restaurants expect 10 percent, if there aren’t any service charges on the bill. Taxi drivers and most other services should be tipped around 10 percent.
Malta is a very safe country to visit. There have been reports of petty theft from parked cars or purse-snatchings, but crime is rare. Be careful driving on the roads, as conditions are poor.
Food and water are safe to consume in Malta, and there are no health risks in traveling to the country. Make sure you still have adequate health insurance, should an emergency occur. If you’re coming from an area infected with yellow fever, you will need a yellow fever vaccination certificate.
Malta’s electrical current is 240 volts, 50Hz and uses UK-style, three-pinned, square plugs.
