Hong Kong’s official currency is the Hong Kong dollar. Banks, moneychangers and hotels can exchange money, but ATMs can be found all over. Major credit cards are widely accepted.
Hong Kong’s international country code is 852. To call another country from Hong Kong, you’ll need to find out what network you’re using first; different networks use different codes. You can find Internet cafes all over the place, and free Internet is offered at many coffee shops, public libraries and shopping malls around town.
If a 10 percent service charge is already added to your bill, just leave some loose change for your waiter. Otherwise a 10 percent tip is customary. To tip your taxi driver, just round up to the nearest dollar.
Travelers usually don’t have problems when visiting Hong Kong, but you should use your common sense and watch your surroundings.
The food and water in Hong Kong are safe, but it might be a good idea to stick to bottled water for the first few days. There is a risk of dengue fever, so you should protect yourself from mosquito bites. Make sure you have health insurance; some of Hong Kong’s medical facilities expect payment in cash.
Hong Kong’s electrical current is 220 volts, 50 Hz and uses three-pinned, UK-style plugs.
