Are there currently restrictions on travel to Taupo related to COVID-19?

Yes, there are currently restrictions on flights to Taupo along with the rest of New Zealand. Before you book or search for flights, consider the following restrictions: New Zealand has restricted entry to all travelers who are not New Zealand nationals (Cook Islands, Niue, Tokelau) or permanent residents, with a few limited exceptions. The following people should seek approval from Immigration New Zealand (INZ) using the limited exceptions process: Partners, dependent children (aged 24 years and under) and legal guardians of New Zealand citizens and residents. Australian citizens and permanent residents who normally live in New Zealand Essential health workers Other essential workers who are specifically agreed to by the New Zealand Government (see here for specific details) Samoan and Tongan citizens making essential travel New Zealand-based partners and dependent children (aged 19 years and under) of a work or student visa holder who is in New Zealand Critical humanitarian travel Maritime crew All of the above travelers will be subject to mandatory isolation at a government facility for 14 days upon arrival unless they’re airline crew members or people transiting through. Travelers may only transit New Zealand if they’re Australian nationals or residents on their way to Australia, or they have government approval. From June 19, transit will be open to all Cook Islanders and Cook Islands Permit Holders who have been present in New Zealand for at least 30 days and whose main purpose of travel is to return home, or to take up or resume employment.. If you are looking to book a trip to Taupo and are outside of the restricted areas, please take the proper precautions and stay informed about traveling during COVID-19.

When is the best time to fly to Taupo?

Although Taupo offers activities throughout the year, the peak travel season generally falls between November and March. These are the warmest months in Taupo, with temperatures generally in the 60s and 70s. The warm weather tends to draw crowds, though, and with school breaks falling during this time, Taupo becomes a major vacation destination during these months. The off-season falls between June and August, when temperatures are at their lowest. Travelers who want to beat the crowds and still enjoy somewhat warm weather should plan to visit during the shoulder season months of September, October, April and May. The crowds are much more tolerable during these months, and temperatures are still enjoyable in the 50s, on average.

Taupo overview

The outdoors beckon on New Zealand’s North Island, especially when it comes to visiting the picturesque town of Taupo. Here, forces of nature are hard at work, creating a majestic backdrop for both leisure and adventure travelers. From the lakes and waterfalls to the incredible volcanoes surrounding the town, there is certainly no shortage of natural beauty to enjoy in Taupo.

A visit to this New Zealand town must include a trip to Huka Falls, where the Waikato River – the widest in New Zealand – is squeezed into a narrow rapid and gushes over a cliff with incredible force and volume. When it comes to sightseeing in Taupo, visitors should also include the geothermal hotbed that is Craters of the Moon, where tourists can walk through an active geothermal field filled with steam vents and bubbling mud pools. Tongariro National Park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and, as the oldest national park in the country, offers a rich cultural and natural history.

For travelers who enjoy being more hands-on during their travels, Taupo and its wealth of adrenaline-pumping activities are sure to please. The views of Taupo’s volcano-lined landscape can be enjoyed through both bungee jumping and skydiving, depending on how adventurous the itinerary will be. For those who prefer to keep their feet a little closer to the ground, Taupo offers plenty of options, too. Lake Taupo buzzes with a flurry of water activities, including boating, cruising, sailing and fishing, while the abundance of natural landscape makes for beautiful hiking opportunities.
