When is the best time to fly to Taupo?

Choose a month below to see average flight price and weather conditions.

Although Taupo offers activities throughout the year, the peak travel season generally falls between November and March. These are the warmest months in Taupo, with temperatures generally in the 60s and 70s. The warm weather tends to draw crowds, though, and with school breaks falling during this time, Taupo becomes a major vacation destination during these months. The off-season falls between June and August, when temperatures are at their lowest. Travelers who want to beat the crowds and still enjoy somewhat warm weather should plan to visit during the shoulder season months of September, October, April and May. The crowds are much more tolerable during these months, and temperatures are still enjoyable in the 50s, on average.

Taupo overview

The outdoors beckon on New Zealand’s North Island, especially when it comes to visiting the picturesque town of Taupo. Here, forces of nature are hard at work, creating a majestic backdrop for both leisure and adventure travelers. From the lakes and waterfalls to the incredible volcanoes surrounding the town, there is certainly no shortage of natural beauty to enjoy in Taupo.

A visit to this New Zealand town must include a trip to Huka Falls, where the Waikato River – the widest in New Zealand – is squeezed into a narrow rapid and gushes over a cliff with incredible force and volume. When it comes to sightseeing in Taupo, visitors should also include the geothermal hotbed that is Craters of the Moon, where tourists can walk through an active geothermal field filled with steam vents and bubbling mud pools. Tongariro National Park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and, as the oldest national park in the country, offers a rich cultural and natural history.

For travelers who enjoy being more hands-on during their travels, Taupo and its wealth of adrenaline-pumping activities are sure to please. The views of Taupo’s volcano-lined landscape can be enjoyed through both bungee jumping and skydiving, depending on how adventurous the itinerary will be. For those who prefer to keep their feet a little closer to the ground, Taupo offers plenty of options, too. Lake Taupo buzzes with a flurry of water activities, including boating, cruising, sailing and fishing, while the abundance of natural landscape makes for beautiful hiking opportunities.
