The flight to Rwanda will vary in duration based on your city of departure, as well as the number of stopovers and their duration. Typically, flights originating from Chicago will average about 18h 40m travel time, while flights from New York average 20h 30m-28h 55m. Los Angeles passengers can expect a flight time of approximately 30h for flights to Rwanda from LAX. Watch Rwanda flight deals, which may offer lower fares but add as much as double the travel time.
Unfortunately, direct flights to Rwanda are not available from any cities in the US. All major cities do offer one-stop flights and other indirect routes, however. New York, Washington, Los Angeles, Chicago, and Boston are the most popular cities of departure, with flights available from Qatar Airways, Delta, Brussels Airlines, Ethiopian Airlines, United, and Turkish Airlines, among others. All flights arrive at Kigali International Airport just outside the capital city center.
Taxis and car hire with a driver are probably the safest and easiest ways to travel around Rwanda for international visitors. You can drive yourself, but some roads aren’t paved and night driving is dangerous with erratic headlight use by local drivers. Landslides are common in spring and fall, as well. Car hire from Europcar and other local companies is available at most hotels and the airport. Taxis should have an orange stripe to denote their official status. Make sure that you agree on fares in advance to avoid being overcharged, however. Bike and scooter taxis are cheap and accessible and offer the quickest transportation. However, they can be risky because of driving habits and road conditions.
Rwanda is known as the “land of a thousand hills”, offering plenty of outdoor activities and landscapes to explore. Visitors can check out Volcanoes National Park for hiking, eco-tours, and gorilla watching. Kigali, the capital city, is also home to a growing cosmopolitan ambiance. The film industry is getting its legs in Hollywood and there are a growing number of restaurants and bars to explore in the capital, as well. The Rwanda Film Festival is held each July in different locations around the country and Kibuye offers a resort town full of markets, restaurants, and water activities for tourists. The National University of Rwanda is located in Butare, which is also home to craft shops and a botanical garden. Beaches are plentiful, as well. Those wishing to pay respects in light of the 1994 genocides can visit the Kigali Genocide Memorial Centre. Akagera National Park and Nyungwe Forest National Park are also worth a visit.
US nationals will need a passport to fly to Rwanda. Your passport should not expire less than six months from your date of entry to the country. US travelers will also need to obtain a visa prior to leaving the US in order to visit. 30-day tourist visas can be purchased at your port of entry for $30 USD, but it is recommended to obtain a visa in advance to avoid delays and potential issues.
