The Croatian city of Dubrovnik is situated along the Adriatic Sea, beckoning visitors to explore its stunning beaches and charming Old Town.
Dubrovnik’s beaches range from beautiful sweeping curves of sand to rugged coves with soaring cliffs. Lapad Beach and Banje Beach are both easily accessible and very pretty. Lokrum Island, accessible by ferry, offers a chance to escape the summer crowds.
The city experienced heavy bombing in the early 1990s, but is now making a full comeback as a tourist hot spot. The city walls are well worth exploring and offer superb views of the area. St. John’s Fort houses the Maritime Museum, and The Stradun – the city’s main street – is the vibrant heart of the Old Town, beautifully paved with limestone and lined with bars, shops and cafes. Visitors can climb up to the cable car station and take a ride up Srd Hill, to take in spectacular views of the city and sea.
Other museums to visit in Dubrovnik include the Ethnographic Museum, with its collections of textiles and folk costumes, and the Rector’s Palace Museum, featuring paintings and artifacts. “Game of Thrones” fans can enjoy a show-themed tour of filming locations in the city.

Staying in or near the Old Town is a good option for those who’d like to be in the heart of things with good transport options. Banje Beach is also nearby. Visitors looking for a little more outdoor space and a pool may prefer to stay in a nearby village.
The Old Town is a maze of little streets which can be fun but somewhat tricky to navigate on foot. It’s a small area but some streets are quite steep. Buses run between the Old Town and other destinations. Cars can be rented in advance or on arrival.

Dubrovnik Airport is about 10 miles from the city and shuttle buses are available (about a 45-minute ride) for transport to the local bus station, which is 1.5 miles from downtown. Alternatively, visitors can take a taxi direct from the airport. Some hotels also offer airport pick-up, either free of charge or with payment of a supplement – this is often the easiest way of getting into Dubrovnik.
