Are there currently restrictions on travel to Broken Hill related to COVID-19?

Yes, there are currently restrictions on flights to Broken Hill along with the rest of Australia. Before you book or search for flights, consider the following restrictions: Australia has restricted the entry of all travelers, with the exception of Australian nationals and permanent residents and their immediate family members, New Zealand nationals residing in Australia, diplomats accredited to Australia and residing in Australia and their immediate family members, and airline crew. Travelers who are not Australian citizens and returning permanent residents and their immediate family members need to apply for an exemption to enter Australia. All travelers are required to quarantine for 14 days at the first point of entry. Quarantines take place in state-designated facilities and are free of charge, except in the Northern Territory and Queensland. Airline crew are subject to self-isolation until their next scheduled flight. Foreign nationals may transit through Australia if the connecting flight is within 72 hours of the arriving flight. They must either have a transit visa or be nationals of a visa-exempt country. Transit passengers don’t need to apply for an exemption to travel restrictions if they are booked to depart on a connecting flight from the same airport within eight hours and they are not going to leave the airport. Travelers who plan to leave the airport before boarding their connecting flight or who will be at the airport for longer than eight hours need to apply for a travel exemption here and will be subject to quarantine until their departing flight. Travelers from New Zealand and Pacific Islanders may not need a travel exemption. More information on transiting Australia is available here. Travelers planning to travel across Australian state borders should note that some Australian states also have domestic travel restrictions, border restrictions, and quarantine requirements in place. In the case of onward travel within Australia, travelers are advised to check in advance with their travel/accommodation provider.. If you are looking to book a trip to Broken Hill and are outside of the restricted areas, please take the proper precautions and stay informed about traveling during COVID-19.

Broken Hill, the gateway to Outback New South Wales, is a fascinating town dedicated to mining and art.

Its mining history stretches back to the latter years of the 19th century; BHP Billiton, the world’s largest mining company, has roots in the town. Broken Hill itself was founded in 1883 and several of its street names were inspired by the minerals and resources that were found there – argent, chloride, sulphide and cobalt for example.

At the edge of the Central Business District is the Miner’s Memorial, which commemorates the hundreds of workers who died while working the mine. There are several art galleries for travelers to visit, such as Broken Hill Regional Art Gallery, Pro Hart and Jack Absalom and the Brushmen of the Bush, along with heritage buildings to see, too. The Silver City Art Center houses the world’s largest (40 feet x 328 feet) acrylic on canvas painting.

Within an hour’s drive of Broken Hill are Silverton (the setting of several movies), Kinchega National Park and the Menindee Lakes.
