Singapore’s official currency is the Singapore dollar. Many large shopping centers also accept US and Australian dollars, the UK pound and yen. Hotels, shops and restaurants all accept major credit cards, and ATMs are easy to find. You can cash traveler’s checks at banks or at licensed moneychangers in some hotels. Banks will even advance cash against major credit cards, but many do not do foreign exchange on Saturdays.
Singapore’s international country code is 65. To call another country from Singapore, dial 001 followed by the appropriate country code. You can make local and international phone calls at public phone booths, which accept phone cards or credit cards. There are Internet cafes around the city.
Most restaurants and hotels already include a 10 percent service charge on the bill, so you don’t need to tip. It’s customary to tip only for excellent service.
Singapore is extremely safe. Random theft will happen, but crime levels are very low.
If you’re coming from a country infected by yellow fever, you’ll need a yellow fever vaccination certificate to enter the country. Dengue fever is a serious risk, and you should avoid poorly cooked food and untreated water. Medical facilities are excellent but expensive. Make sure you have health insurance coverage.
Singapore’s electrical current is 230 volts, 50Hz and uses square, three-pinned plugs.
