Airport Overview

Located about 35 miles from central London, London Stansted Airport (STN) is a popular choice for travelers looking to find cheap flights to England’s capital city. Stansted Airport is home-base for low-cost carrier Ryanair, which serves more than 100 international destinations from the airport.

The most popular flights out of Stansted Airport are to European vacation destinations such as Dublin, Alicante, Malaga, Rome, Faro and Palma de Mallorca. However, you can also access some interesting, more out-of-the-way places from Stansted – so get creative next time you’re planning a break.

A highly functional, efficient airport – enjoyed as much by business passengers as those traveling with families in tow – Stansted Airport is a lovely gateway to the United Kingdom’s most important city. Last year, the airport handled nearly 19 million passengers. Expect that figure to rise, as hordes of tourists descend on London for the 2012 Olympic Games.

Getting into Town

Airport Taxi: Stansted Airport operates official airport taxis – you can find the reservation desk in the international arrivals concourse. Be warned, it’s an expensive trip. The trip should take about an hour, depending on traffic.

Buses: Stansted Airport is blessed with a fast, efficient coach system. Frequent coaches depart from the station (located directly across from the terminal building), calling at central London destinations such as Liverpool Street, Victoria Station, Baker Street and Kings Cross. This is a very cost-effective way of getting to central London from Stansted Airport – although you might be on the bus for up to 90 minutes.

Train: The most convenient way to access central London from Stansted Airport is via the Stansted Express rail service. The train station is located directly beneath the terminal building, with trains departing every 15 minutes from Liverpool Street Station in central London. The trip takes 46 minutes.

Car Parking

There are three main parking options available at Stansted Airport: Short Stay, Mid Stay, and Long Stay. The Short Stay parking areas are located within easy walking distance of the terminal building. The Mid Stay parking area is located a short distance from the airport but is linked to the terminal building via a free shuttle service, running every ten minutes, and taking just five minutes to make the trip. The Long Stay parking area is located a bit further from the airport, but again, is linked to the terminal building by a free shuttle service, running every 15 minutes, and taking about 15 minutes to complete the trip.

Information Desks

The information desk is located in the international arrivals area. It’s staffed 24 hours per day, and in addition to airport and flight information, offers tourist pamphlets, and fax, photocopying and printing services.

Airport Facilities

Money and communications: ATMs, foreign exchange offices (including a pre-order facility), Internet kiosks, post boxes, VAT refund desks.

Luggage: Baggage trolleys are available. There’s a 24-hour left luggage service available (located next to check-in Zones G and H). There’s a lost property office located in check-in Zone G. Lost luggage queries are dealt with by the airlines concerned.

Conference and business: In addition to two business lounges – offering Wi-Fi access, photocopying and fax services, and complimentary drinks, snacks and newspapers – Stansted Airport also has extensive conferencing facilities, located very short distances from the terminal building. The United Business Center has meeting rooms for between two and 30 delegates; the Hilton London Stansted Airport hotel has 16 meeting and conference rooms, with space for two to 250 people; and the Radisson SAS Hotel London Stansted Airport has 26 rooms, the largest of which can accommodate 400 delegates.

Shopping: There’s a great amount of shopping to be done in London Stansted Airport. Most of the best stores are located in the departures area, after the security checkpoints. Shop for iPhone, iPad and Blackberry accessories at Add+, funky fashion at All Saints, quintessentially British souvenirs at Glorious Britain, toys at Hamleys, and books, newspapers and magazines at WH Smith. There are also some high-end boutique stores (Hugo Boss, Swarovski), a convenience store (Spar), and a huge duty-free shop (World Duty-Free).

Food and drink: There’s a wide range of food and beverage outlets at Stansted Airport, catering to every possible craving. Fast food junkies will find the usual selection, including Burger King, Starbucks and Krispy Kreme. For a square breakfast, try Frankie & Benny’s, and for fresh, healthy “anytime” meals, you can’t go wrong with Pret A Manger. If you’re looking to have a sit-down family meal, Ponti’s is a firm favorite – and if you’re just looking for something to drink, head to the Bridge Bar and Eating House.

Other facilities: Other amenities at London Stansted Airport include baby care facilities, family rooms, showers, prayer rooms, a pharmacy, medical services, a bookmaker (Coral), and access and facilities for disabled passengers.
