Airport Overview

Cologne-Bonn Airport (CGN), so-named because it is located between the two beautiful west German cities, is the sixth-largest airport in Germany, and offers good connections to a wide array of attractive European and North African destinations.

Flights to Cologne-Bonn Airport are operated by several low-cost carriers, including Germanwings, TUlfly, easyJet and Wizz Air, so be on the lookout for great deals on flights to exotic destinations such as Cape Verde and Marrakech.

For those looking to travel around Germany, Cologne-Bonn Airport is a wonderful access-point, just 9 miles (15km) from Cologne and 10 miles (16km) from Bonn. Both are celebrated international cities, full of plenty of things to see and do, and the airport is also far less busy than Munich, Berlin or Frankfurt.

Terminal Transfer

There is a free shuttle service that operates between the two terminal buildings (via the parking area). Allow 20 minutes to get from one building to the other.

Getting into Town

Airport taxis: Taxis are readily available outside the terminal buildings. Expect to pay €20-30 for the 15-25 minute trip into either city.

Train: Cologne-Bonn Airport has its own train station, located between the terminal buildings (easily accessible on foot, though there is also a shuttle available). From there, S-Bahn trains run regularly to Cologne’s Hauptbahnhof (central train station), taking 15-20 minutes and costing about €4.

Bus: Public buses are available at Cologne-Bonn Airport, departing from outside the terminal buildings. Airport Bus No. 170 runs to Cologne Hauptbahnhof every 15-30 minutes, costing €5, and taking 20 minutes to complete the trip; while Bus No. 670 travels to Bonn every 20-30 minutes, costing €5, and taking 30-40 minutes.

Car Parking

Cologne-Bonn Airport has parking spaces available for more than 12,000 vehicles. The short-term parking zone costs €1.50 per 15 minutes (and you can stay for a maximum of 2 hours). Car Park 32, right outside Terminal 2, is free for the first 10 minutes, and then costs €1.50 per 15 minutes after that. Car Park 1, right outside Terminal 1, charges €4.50 per hour, with a daily rate of €23. Car Park 2, reserved for women and disabled passengers, is €3 per hour (or part thereof), €23 per day, or €99 per week. Car Park 3, within easy walking distance of the Terminal 2, costs €3 per hour (or part thereof), €18 a day for the first two days, and then €39 for the week. Big cars should park in the Nord Car Park, which charges the same rates as Car Park 2.

Information Desks

There are help and information desks located between Concourses B and C in Terminal 1, and in Concourse D in Terminal 2.

Airport Facilities

Money and communications: ATMs and currency exchange facilities are available throughout Cologne-Bonn Airport. There are two banks, one in each of the terminal buildings (departures section), and a post office in the arrivals area of Terminal 2.

Luggage: Luggage storage facilities, and a lost and found office, can be found in the arrivals section of Terminal 2.

Conference and business: Conference facilities for up to six hundred people are available thanks to the airport’s Wollhaf Conference Center, located on the third floor of Terminal 1, or from the Holiday Inn Conference Center (located a short distance from the airport). These conference facilities sport telephone and fax facilities, and audio-visual equipment and catering can be provided on request. There is also an Airport Business Lounge in the departures area of Terminal 2.

Shopping: The shopping options at Cologne-Bonn Airport are classier than your average airport. Shops are mainly found in the departures areas of the terminal buildings. In addition to kiosks and a small (though well-stocked) supermarket, you can shop for designer clothes at Hugo Boss or Esprit, buy luxury food items from REWE City, and peruse Kirschner’s better-than-average collection of books, magazines and newspapers. Duty-free shopping, for non-EU passengers, is available at Starwalk (Terminal 1).

Food and drink: There’s a great range and variety of food and beverage outlets at Cologne-Bonn Airport. Dining establishments are spread throughout the airport, in both the arrivals and departures sections of both terminal buildings. Franchise stores (Burger King, Subway) are around, but there are also some more ‘local’ options, such as Kafer DeliLounge (Terminal 2, Concourse D). The airport has a great selection of bars, as well – try Sion Kölsch (Terminal 1, Concourse C).

Other facilities: Other facilities at Cologne-Bonn Airport include a travel center (Terminal 2), a hairdresser (Terminal 1), medical facilities, TVs, a pharmacy, baby-changing rooms, observation terraces, and full access and facilities for disabled passengers.

Wi-Fi: Wi-Fi access is provided throughout the terminal buildings by T-Online; you can pay-as-you-go (using a credit card), or buy a prepaid voucher. You can get free Wi-Fi access at Starbucks (provided you buy something to eat or drink), located in Terminal 1, Concourse B.
