When is the best time to fly to Zihuatanejo?
Located on the south west coast of Mexico, Zihuatanejo has a tropical savanna climate. Between June and October, Zihuatanejo has a hot and wet season, while November to May are cooler and drier. The town is generally quiet, but hosts a few events during the year. In February, over 100 boats arrive from around the world for the Annual Zihua Sail Fest. There are many parties, fairs, auctions and concerts, which raise funds for the area's disadvantaged children. In March, the Zihuatanejo International Guitar Festival entertains locals and visitors with various concerts. November and December tend to be the busiest months, so flights to Zihuatanejo are in higher demand then. Mexican tourists visit the area throughout the year, so it is worth searching for deals on flights to see when the biggest discounts are available. A relatively young resort, Zihuatanejo was developed for tourism in the 1970's and it still retains the charm of its fishing village past. Often referred to as Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo, due to the close proximity to the larger town of Ixtapa, around 3 miles (5km) away. This holiday town is, however, much more laid back than the neighbouring resort. Zihuatanejo enjoys all the benefits and amenities of Ixtapa, without as much hustle and bustle. Zihuatanejo is just 4 square miles (10 sq.km) and the town centre "El Centro" is a maze of narrow stone lined streets. The Craft Market (Mercado de Artensanías) showcases local crafts, there are hundreds of stalls where you can buy decorations, souvenirs and gifts. Getting a cheap flight to Zihuatanejo ensures you have more money to spend on shopping! The Archaeological Museum of the Costa Grande displays artefacts and the history of the area dating back to the Aztecs and beyond. Zihuatanejo is home to one of the best sport fishing areas in the world. During the first weekend of May, the International Sailfish Tournament is held in town. The local fishing industry ensures there is always a fresh catch available in the many seafront restaurants. There are many other outdoor activities to do, such as snorkelling, scuba diving and swimming with dolphins. When it is time to relax, nowhere is better than the sweeping white sands of the bay's beaches.
Getting around Zihuatanejo
It is easy to walk around this small, sleepy town and many roads are pedestrian only, so it is safe for a relaxing stroll. There are also several public bus routes and taxis available.
Getting from the Airport to the City
Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo International Airport (ZIH) is around 7 miles (11 km) from Zihuatanejo, and the journey takes approximately 15 minutes by car. There is a taxi desk at the exit, where you can buy a ticket for your journey. Rates depend on the number of passengers, type of vehicle and destination. There are also public buses and rental cars available from several global brands.
