City overview

At only a three and a half hour drive from Toronto, the Canadian city of North Bay is a pleasant detour from the tourist trail. Nestled on the shore of Lake Nipissing in Northeastern Ontario, the city is renowned for its water-based activities, particularly fishing and sailing. The nearby Trout Lake is also a superb spot for enjoying a raft of water sports, such as swimming, waterskiing and canoeing. At the city’s Waterfront Park, there’s plenty of entertainment to amuse the family, with an ornate heritage carousel and a miniature railway. The Waterfront area also offers plenty of beaches and a variety of tourist activities, including sightseeing cruises along the French River and around Callander Bay. You can also take a scenic cruise around the Manitou Islands, located in the centre of Lake Nipissing. If you want to learn more about the city and its residents from past and present, make a visit to the Discovery North Bay Museum, which is situated in the historic train station. Alternatively, take a fascinating journey into the life of the famous Dionne Quintuplets at the Dionne Quints Museum, which displays memorabilia from the Dionne family and their five identical daughters, who lived here during the Great Depression. North Bay is a hub for many sporting events, where you can see local teams compete in ice hockey, soccer and football. There are also many recreational areas throughout the city, so if you’re a keen walker or cyclist, there are several urban trails that each provide fantastic sightseeing opportunities around the city. If you want to see some of the surrounding countryside, The Black Forest Trails located to the north of the city offers almost a mile (1.5km) of walking trails through attractive pine forests, whilst Duchesnay Falls is an accessible waterfall that is situated just west of the city.
