Money

Nepal’s official currency is the Nepali rupee, which breaks down into 100 paisa. It can be hard to find small change in Nepal, so it’s a good idea to have a good supply of small bills handy. Prices for tourist activities are usually quoted in US dollars. You can cash in US dollar and euro traveler’s checks in most banks and major hotels, and checks are often accepted in tourist areas. Kathmandu and Pokhara have ATMs and tourist areas usually accept major credit cards. Keep your receipts when you exchange money, so you can exchange rupees back before you leave. You’ll need cash when you’re trekking.

Nepal’s international country code is 977. To call another country from Nepal, dial 00 followed by the appropriate country code. There are Internet cafes all over the place in Kathmandu and Pokhara’s tourist centers.

Tipping

Tip 10 percent at restaurants, unless there is already a service charge included in the bill. It’s customary to tip guides and porters, but everywhere else gratuities are appreciated but not expected.

Safety

Nepal has had some government instability in recent years, so avoid demonstrations and public gatherings; they can get violent. Protests can also disrupt the country’s transportation and business, so it’s a good idea to get information before heading out.

Health

No vaccinations are required for traveling to Nepal, but it’s a good idea to get immunized against cholera, hepatitis A, tetanus, diphtheria, meningitis and typhoid. The low-lying areas like Chitwan National Park have a risk of malaria between June and September. Japanese encephalitis outbreaks occur every year from July to December; consider getting vaccinated. Don’t drink untreated water. One of the biggest risks for travelers is altitude sickness. Hospital quality varies, and you should make sure you carry health insurance.
