Airport Overview

London City Airport (LCY) is a single-runway airport that serves London’s financial district. It is sometimes referred to as a STOLport, meaning that the airlines serving the airport operate on a Short Take Off and Landing basis.

Located on a former Docklands site, flights to London City Airport are usually booked by business people looking to gain quick access to the major financial district of Canary Wharf. However, the number of leisure travelers using London City Airport is increasing every year – especially during ski season, when flights to Zurich, Geneva and Milan are especially popular.

Just 6 miles (10km) from the city-center, London City Airport offers very easy transport links for passengers looking to access London’s CBD. In fact, in the July 2008 issue of Business Traveler magazine, London City Airport was voted as having the “best public transport links in the world.”

The airport is currently in the process of expanding and upgrading its terminal and runway facilities, and aims to be able to handle 8 million passengers per year by 2030. London City Airport is just 3km (2 miles) from the site of the 2012 Olympic Games – a fact which is sure to see its passenger traffic increase.

Note that London City Airport is not open 24 hours a day and keeps the following schedule: Monday to Friday from 5am to 10pm, Saturday from 5am to 1pm, and Sunday from 11am to 10:20pm.

Terminal Transfer

Not applicable, as London City Airport has only one terminal building.

Getting into Town

Airport Taxi: London City Airport boasts the longest taxi rank in Europe – so don’t panic if you haven’t called ahead and reserved a cab. The fleet of taxis can be found just outside the terminal building. Typical destinations include (approximate fares and journey times given in brackets): the West End (£25, 30 minutes); Canary Wharf (£12, 15 minutes); Covent Garden (£24, 25 minutes); Oxford Street (£30, 35 minutes); and Westminster (£30, 35 minutes).

Buses: Public buses leave every 10-20 minutes from directly outside the terminal building. Bus No. 473 operates between London City Airport and the Prince Regent DLR Station (a 15-minute journey), stopping at Stratford, Silvertown, and North Woolwich along the way. Bus 474 operates between London City Airport and East Beckton (a 50-minute journey), calling at Canning Town, North Woolwich and Silvertown along the way. Bus tickets are £2.20.

Train: The Docklands Light Railway (DLR) service is an overground service that connects London City Airport with the London Underground, and numerous other rail services. London City Airport DLR Station is connected to the terminal building, and is served by DLR trains every 8-15 minutes. Located in Zone 3, it’ll take less than seven minutes to reach Canning Town Station (where you can change to the Jubilee Line), and about 22 minutes to reach Bank Station (where you can change to the Central, Northern, Circle, District, or Waterloo & City Lines). A trip to a Zone 1 destination in the city center from London City Airport DLR Station will cost £4.

Car Parking

London City Airport offers short- and long-term parking facilities. Both car parks are located within easy walking distance of the terminal building. You can use a credit card to pay for your parking, at no extra charge. The Short Stay car park charges £4.20 for up to 30 minutes; £8.40 for up to an hour; £12.60 for up to two hours; £18.90 for up to four hours; £29.40 for up to 12 hours; and £45 for up to 24 hours. The Main Stay car park charges £14.70 for up to four hours; £25.20 for up to 12 hours; £40 for up to 24 hours; £42 for up to 25 hours; £45 for up to 26 hours; £50 for up to 29 hours; £80 for up to 48 hours; and £40 per day, or part thereof, thereafter.

Information Desks

A prominent, well-signed information desk is located on your left, as you enter the terminal building. The friendly staff there can provide information on transport to and from the airport, parking, flight status and more.

Airport Facilities

Money and communications: There are five ATMs located throughout the airport (one of which allows you to withdraw Euros), three Travelex foreign exchange offices, public telephones, a post box with daily collection, and workstations with pay-as-you-go Internet access (located in the departures lounge, between Gates 1 and 2).

Luggage: Baggage trolleys are available (free of charge) in the parking areas, the main terminal concourse, and the arrivals hall. Queries about lost luggage should be directed to the information desk. There is a left luggage facility available at London City Airport for £5 per item per 24-hour period. To use this facility, first log your items at the information desk, where you’ll receive a receipt that you’ll need to take with you to the storage lockers, which are located in Security Zone A (close to the check-in desks).

Conference and business: London City Airport boasts the Meridian Business Center, which has facilities for up to 120 delegates in 16 meeting and conference rooms. Facilities include private work offices, audio-visual equipment, secretarial support, fax and photocopying services, Internet access, and catering and private dining options.

Shopping: There is a small, but high-quality, selection of stores at London City Airport. Before security, your sole option is WH Smith, where you can find stationery, books, magazines and newspapers. After security, there’s another WH Smith; a Gassan Diamonds outlet, famous for the Gassan 121 Diamond (a diamond with 121 facets); and an Aelia duty-free store offering tax-free prices on high-end perfumes, cosmetics, men’s and women’s fashion and accessories, liquor and tobacco products (they pride themselves on their cigar selection).

Food and drink: Again, London City Airport’s range of food and beverage outlets may not be huge, but the establishments are solid, and are guaranteed to satisfy any hunger pangs you might have while waiting for your flight. Before security, in the main terminal concourse, you can find fresh, wholesome sandwiches, salads and snacks at Pret A Manger, and delicious baked goods at Panopolis. After security, in the departures lounge, there’s another Panopolis, an Illy coffee bar and a Caffe Nero. Trattoria is a sit-down restaurant specializing in breakfasts and fresh pasta and seafood dishes. Bar Ten28 is also in the departures lounge, offering drinks, light snacks, and a cool, relaxed ambience.

Other facilities: Other facilities at London City Airport include online and self-service check-in, a complimentary shoeshine service, baby-changing facilities, and full access and amenities for disabled passengers.

Wi-Fi: Free Wi-Fi access is available throughout London City Airport.
