Finnair Check-in

Finnair passengers must check in one hour before departure or 45 minutes before domestic flights. Travelers can check in at a desk or a self-service kiosk. Online and mobile services are available up to 36 hours before departure. Finnair Plus members may request automatic cell phone check-in.

Finnair provides complete timetables, including arrival and departure times. Information on delays and estimated arrival times is also available to passengers and family members.

Delay Frequency

Finnair has an 83 percent on-time arrival rate. Only 8 percent of flights arrive late. Excessive delays and very late arrivals affect 7 percent of flights.

Finnair baggage allowance

Finnair’s free baggage allowance varies by class. Economy passengers are permitted to check one suitcase weighing 50 pounds or less. Additionally, one carry-on is permitted in the cabin.

Carry-On Bags:

Passengers are permitted to bring one carry-on and one small personal item in the cabin. Carry-on suitcases must measure less than 22 by 18 by 10 inches and weigh less than 17.5 pounds.

Checked Baggage:

Economy passengers are limited to one free checked bag on all flights. Economy Pro and Business Class passengers may check two bags. On intercontinental flights, business travelers may check three bags weighing up to 50 pounds each. Excess baggage fees are imposed on subsequent pieces based on the weight and destination.

Fragile Luggage:

According to Finnair’s conditions of carriage, fragile items are unacceptable as checked baggage. Such items may be brought in the cabin, but your right to recover compensation for damage will be limited.

Sports Equipment/Oversized Items:

Special items and sports equipment count toward your baggage limit. Mandatory excess baggage fees are imposed on certain items, including canoes, kayaks and bicycles. Large musical instruments and oversized items can be carried in the cabin if an additional seat is purchased.

Finnair legroom

Available legroom depends on the type of jet and the cabin configuration. Finnair passengers can purchase additional legroom. Fees for this upgrade range from $22 to $82 depending on the flight.

Pre-arranged seating

For an additional fee, Finnair passengers may select a seat of their choice when making reservations. Alternatively, passengers can select a seat at check-in for free.

Passenger change details

Most Finnair reservations can be cancelled or modified without a penalty within 24 hours hour of the purchase. Unused and partially unused tickets can be refunded for a $75 fee. Depending on the route, the cost to modify a changeable ticket is up to $400. Service charges, fees and upgrades are nonrefundable.

Child fares

Finnair offers several services for families traveling with children, including a special check-in desk at the Helsinki-Vantaa Airport. Children’s tickets are available to passengers between 2 and 11. Infant tickets are required even if the child is traveling on a parent’s lap. With appropriate documentation, passengers between 5 and 11 can travel alone. Staff escorts can be arranged at the time of the reservation.

Senior fares

Special discounted fares are available to passengers who are over 65. This discount is also available online.

Pets

With prior authorization, dogs, cats, rabbits and rodents are permitted on Finnair flights. All pets must have a valid pet passport, including vaccination records. Small pets are permitted in the cabin if the animal and carrier weigh less than 17 pounds. Larger pets travel in the hold. Fees vary by destination.

In-flight service

Finnair offers a variety of onboard services, including in-flight shopping, entertainment, newspapers, magazines and satellite phones. Personal programming on Finnair flights includes films, television programs, music, games and children’s shows.

Air miles

Through Finnair Plus, passengers can redeem air miles on flights, hotels and car rentals. Points are valid on Finnair flights, some Flybe Nordic routes and services provided by 15 airlines in the Oneworld alliance. Elite members enjoy priority boarding and other perks.

Finnair offers a variety of award-winning in-flight meals and wines. Menus vary by class and on domestic, European and intercontinental flights.
