Fiji Airways: Expert advice and recommendations

Utilize the following guide to know what to expect when flying with Fiji Airways, including pre-flight check-in processes, baggage information, in-flight experience, and more.

Fiji Airways is the flag carrier of the South Pacific island nation. The popular destination is a tourist hotspot for honeymooners and jetsetters looking for a tropical escape. Fiji’s home airline is known for blending modern aviation with the rich cultural heritage and warmth of the archipelago, otherwise known as the "Bula spirit."

How the airline differentiates itself

The airline has a distinctive look and feel from the moment you board. Fiji Airways’ signature "Masi" symbol and crew uniforms reflect traditional motifs, showcasing a connection to its roots. In recent years, the airline has expanded beyond its regional presence to offer long-haul international flights to destinations in Australia, New Zealand, Asia, North America and various Pacific islands.

Here’s one of my favorite features when flying Fiji Airways: travelers going between North America and Australia or New Zealand can use Fiji as a stopover. The stopover program is free for up to 72 hours to break up the long international journey. You can choose to stopover on the first flight, the return leg, or both flights. This is a great way to get a taste of Fiji, and the destination’s rich wildlife and nature with little commitment.

What’s even better is that Fiji Airways partners with local guides to show you around the city or you can separately book a tour package with specific operators. That means you can enjoy activities like snorkeling, diving, surfing, hiking, zip lining, or just relaxing on the beaches and lush rainforests.

Where the airline flies

The airline has grown from a small regional carrier to a sizable international airline with a wide network across the Pacific. While Fiji Airways connects many of the smaller islands near Nadi, the capital of Fiji, its reach now extends to parts of Asia, North America, and Oceania. In the U.S., that includes nonstops to Los Angeles (LAX), San Francisco (SFO), and Honolulu (HNL) with a new route to Dallas-Fort Worth (DFW) debuting soon.

Elsewhere, Fiji Airways’ subsidiary, Fiji Link, handles domestic flights. This helps with connecting passengers to key Fijian islands like Viti Levu and Vanua Levu as well as smaller, remote locations.

The types of aircraft and cabin classes

The Airbus A350 and Airbus A330 are the two widebody, long-haul aircraft that travelers will experience on Fiji Airways. The A350 is the airline’s most modern plane with the best seats and features large windows and a quiet cabin environment. Meanwhile, the A330, while an older aircraft, still offers lie-flat business class seats, in-flight entertainment systems, and large overhead bins.

On shorter regional routes, Fiji Airways flies several planes with its narrowbody fleet including the Boeing 737 MAX 8. The smallest planes are the ATR 72-600, ATR 42-600, and De Havilland Twin Otters which are used for local flights to outer islands, landing on small airstrips where larger planes cannot operate.

Business class

Called “Tabua Class,” this is Fiji Airways' premium offering, featuring lie-flat seats and exclusive services designed for long-haul comfort. That includes seats in a full lie-flat setup in a 1-2-1 configuration on the A350 and A330 aircraft. The seats recline 180 degrees to ensure restful sleep with 21-inch-wide frames, a pitch of 60 inches, and ample personal space and privacy.

The best business class product is on the Airbus A350, as you’ll get the most amount of privacy and space compared to the older A330 aircraft. In addition, higher humidity levels on the A350, will help combat jet lag. Pro-tip: if you see the option of booking one aircraft over the other, I’d pick booking the A350.

Economy

The airline offers a comfortable economy-class experience across its fleet, with in-flight entertainment, meals, and Fijian hospitality as standard. These seats offer a seat pitch of 31 to 33 inches, depending on the aircraft, with 17.5 to 18 inches of width. While not industry-leading, this is still a fairly good setup for long-haul international flying.

Pre-flight experience

Here’s what you should know about the Fiji Airways ground and pre-flight experience at airports in the US and abroad.

Checked baggage policy

On international flights, economy passengers are allowed one checked bag with a maximum weight of 50 pounds. However, on routes to or from the United States and Canada, passengers can check two bags. Meanwhile, business class passengers are usually allowed two checked bags, each with a maximum weight of 66 pounds.

Fiji Airways charges additional fees for bags that exceed weight or size limits, and the rates can vary by route. I’d recommend pre-purchasing an additional baggage allowance through the Fiji Airways website for a lower fee compared to paying at the airport.

Lounges

The airline has its flagship lounge located at Nadi International Airport, and also partners with lounges at other destinations. The Fiji Airways Premier Lounge has a luxurious, island-inspired experience that reflects Fijian culture and hospitality. Some of my favorite features include a design and ambiance that incorporates local natural wood and tropical plants; a range of Fijiian food and drink options, and the standout amenity which has to be the Fiji Airways Spa, which offers complimentary 15-minute massages.

Beyond Nadi, Fiji Airways has arrangements with lounges in various international destinations at major airports. Some of the best global lounges for its passengers include the Oneworld Lounge at Los Angeles’s Tom Bradley International Terminal, which offers dining, showers, and relaxation areas, as well as Qantas Business Class Lounges in Sydney, Auckland, Melbourne, and more.

Onboard experience

Here's more of what you can expect when onboard a long-haul Fiji Airways flight.

Amenities and features

On long-haul flights, all passengers receive an amenity kit, with the business class guests getting items such as socks, eyeshades, earplugs, lip balm, lotion, and other essentials. The kit is presented in a pouch featuring traditional Fijian designs. For economy guests, you’ll get more basic essentials like earplugs, an eye mask, and a blanket.

Each seat, regardless of cabin, is equipped with a personal touchscreen display that offers a wide selection of movies, TV shows, music, and games. Everyone also gets USB and AC power outlets, as well as personal storage compartments, making it easy for passengers to stay connected and keep their belongings close. In addition, Fiji Airways is one of the few carriers remaining with an in-flight magazine, FijiTime, offering articles on Fijian culture, travel tips, destination highlights, and local stories.

Food and drink

In business, the in-flight dining menu frequently includes traditional Fijian ingredients like fresh seafood, coconut, and taro. Fijian flavors and local ingredients are celebrated, giving travelers an authentic taste of the region. On all international flights, economy passengers also receive complimentary meals with a selection of alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages (including Fiji water). While most meals and drinks are complimentary on international flights, some snacks and premium beverages are available for purchase.

Service

True to the “bula” spirit, the Fiji Airways crew is known for their friendly, warm demeanor and attentiveness to passenger needs. I experienced that on several flights, and it contributes to a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere on board.

Airline partners, earning, and redeeming miles

Fiji Airways has partnerships with several major airlines, allowing passengers to earn points and enjoy reciprocal benefits on other carriers. As an “oneworld Connect” partner, the airline provides benefits with major oneworld airlines like American Airlines, Cathay Pacific, Qantas, and British Airways.

Interestingly, Fiji Airways will soon adopt the loyalty program of American Airlines, called AAdvantage. That means travelers will soon earn and redeem AAdvantage miles on Fiji flights. The collaboration with American Airlines follows another major milestone, with the announcement it will become a full-member of the oneworld alliance in 2025.
