Hiroshima overview

Hiroshima is a large city of some two million people on the Seto Inland Sea in Japan. Its wide boulevards and many waterways have all of the urban bustle of a 21st century Japanese metropolis. There are many excellent restaurants and the city has a lively nightlife. For many though, it is best known for a grim past. A series of elegant memorials in the Peace Memorial Park marks the place where an American atomic bomb was dropped on August 6, 1945. The A-Bomb Dome is the skeleton of a building destroyed by the blast. The Peace Memorial Museum in the park shows what the bomb did to the city. Throughout the city, marble markers are placed to illustrate the extent and effect of the bomb. The City Museum of Contemporary Art takes visitors on a tour of the vibrant present day, with an important collection of Japanese art alongside works by pop artists such as Andy Warhol and Frank Stella. Fudoin, just to the north of Hiroshima, is a beautiful 14th century temple that survived the atomic blast. A visit to the Mazda Museum can also take visitors around the Mazda car factory, but tours must be booked in advance. The city has many parks. Among them are Hijiyama Park and Chuo Park where you can see Hiroshima Castle, dating from the 16th century, destroyed in 1945, but rebuilt in the 1950s. It’s an impressive sight and a popular place for picnics.
