Botswana has a rainy season between December and March. During these months, humidity levels are high, and of course there is plenty of rain. Many tourists choose to avoid visiting Gaborone during the rainy season for this reason, though flights during this time to tend to be appreciably cheaper than during the drier summer months. There are plenty of festivals and other celebrations going on in Gaborone throughout the year, so it can be a good idea to time your visit so that it coincides with one of them. On September 30th every year the country holds Botswana Day Celebrations, which commemorate the country’s freedom from British colonial rule.
If you are looking for some of the most beautiful scenery that you have ever seen, then make sure to come to Gaborone, as this city is home to several stunning nature reserves. Mokolodi Nature Reserve, for example, is great if you love hiking, picnicking, and seeing weird and wonderful animals. This nature reserve also boasts some brilliant vantage points on top of the hills, where you can look down over swathes of forests, looping rivers, and herds of native animals grazing there. If you want to enjoy the best vantage point in the city, though, then make sure to climb Kgale Hill. This hill has well marked hiking trails, and is the highest point in Gaborone. From its summit, you can look down over the city streets, and the view is especially good in the early morning or as the sun is setting. Head down to the Botswana Craft center or one of the city’s bustling markets to pick up some authentic souvenirs. The Three Chiefs Statue is for many people the highlight of their stay in the city. This statue is a tribute to the creation of Botswana, and there are plenty of tour guides around to explain the significance of the statue and the history of the figures that it depicts.
Gaborone is quite spread out, so many visitors find that renting a car is a good way to get around. A rental car also enables you to avoid the cost of a taxi. However, as well as taxis, there are regular minibuses and combis that will take you to key sights, such as the game parks and nature reserves. It can be a good idea to check with other people at your hotel to see if they are visiting the same attractions as you, so that you can team up and share the cost of transport.
The city is served by Sir Seretse Khama International Airport (GBE), which is a small airport located just 6 miles north of downtown. You can reach Gaborone from the airport by taxi, combi, shuttle bus, or rental car.
