Peak Season:
The best time to book flights to Anchorage and travel the area is during the summer months, June through August. The temperature averages around 70°F and rainfall is minimal. If winter sports are your forte, plan to travel to Anchorage in February and trek the mountains or stay around for the annual Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race.
Off Season:
The winter months are cold and blustery in Anchorage, averaging around 10°F, but if you're a snow-lover, cheap flights to Anchorage can be found in the heart of winter.
Cheap flights to Anchorage
Anchorage has an excellent public transportation system called the "People Mover." After exiting your Anchorage flight, take the People Mover from the airport to the city center and enjoy the Anchorage scenery on your immediate tour. Buses run every half hour until 11 p.m. on weekdays but hours are reduced over the weekends. If your flight to Anchorage happens to land post-People Mover hours, take the hotel shuttles to your Anchorage hotel or grab a cab from the airport to your destination.
If you plan to travel around the outskirts of Anchorage, renting a car is your best bet. Reserve the car rental when you book your Anchorage flight and seek out package deals to save money. If your travel to Anchorage happens during the summer, reserve your car rental in advance as summer is the peak travel time in Alaska.
