Medellin was once dubbed ‘The Most Dangerous City in Colombia’. For some, Medellin is still remembered for its association with the infamous drug lord Pablo Esobar. This is the place where he operated his notorious drug cartel, during the 70s right through to the 80s. Much has changed since then. The city has transformed into a destination popular with tourists worldwide, for its natural beauty, annual festivals and colorful culture. Medellin is situated 4,905 feet above sea level, in close proximity to the equator. Positioned inside a beautiful valley, encircled by mountains, Medellin enjoys spring-like weather throughout the year. It has numerous parks, ideal for people watching and relaxing amidst scenic surroundings. The Plaza Botero is a great place to visit, for its 23 amazing life-sized sculptures, all created by Fernando Botero. Art lovers will also enjoy the Museo de Antioquia, which is home to additional works by Botero and other renowned Latin artists. The Parque Explora contains South America’s largest freshwater aquarium. There is an outdoor park here too, with interactive games for children to enjoy and learn about the laws of physics. Parque Lleras is the place to go, for the best restaurants, dance clubs and bars.
Weather-wise, this destination is great to visit all year round. During July there are various festivals, including Colombiamoda, or fashion week. This 3-day event includes private runway shows. The Salsa Festival is a weekend event, occurring in July also. It includes workshops, competitions and dance in the evenings. La Feria de las Flores begins on the last week of July and ends the first week of August. Here you’ll enjoy the antique car parade, a horse parade, flower parade and various concerts. In December the city comes to life with Christmas lights, firework displays and Chivas – a tour bus taking locals and tourists around the streets to view the lights.
Price tickets to Medellin remain constant throughout the year. However, hotels charge more during December, March and April, due to the Christmas and Easter celebrations.
Public transport includes buses and metro services. They are safe and reliable and security is provided at all stations and on individual platforms. Taxis are metered.
