Argentina Travel Guide

Argentina is one of the most unforgettable places on Earth to visit, thanks to its diverse culture and natural beauty. The Europeans arrived in this southernmost South American country in the 16th century, but long before then indigenous groups occupied this land-the Incas were in the Northwest, the Tehuelche in Patagonia, and the Querandí in the Pampas. Each town and city can provide a uniquely fascinating narrative about its people and their ancestors. Today, any visitor who disembarks a flight to Argentina can look forward to an adventurous trip exploring ancient ruins, visiting lush vineyards and meeting the natives.

Most Argentina trips originate and arrive in the capital city of Buenos Aires. Buenos Aires is a modern European-like city with bustling streets and stylish restaurants. Argentina flights are packed with passengers and their purchases including leather goods, rugs, wines and more from shopping in Buenos Aires.

Because of its considerable size, the most economical way to travel around the country is to acquire an Aerolineas Argentinas Visit Argentina Pass while booking your Argentina flights. This enables extensive travel within the country so you can fly from the cosmopolitan capital of Buenos Aires to the rolling terrain of the Central Sierras in Cordoba and then north to the lush wineries in Cafayete.

Patagonia and the Iguazu Falls are two destinations in Argentina that can’t be missed, especially for those who love the great outdoors. Patagonia’s Peninsula Valdes wildlife reserve is home to migrating whales, seals, penguins, sea elephants and dolphins, while the Iguazu National Park’s subtropical rainforest has more than 2000 plant species and 400 bird species perched amongst its trees.

For many people, Argentina is most famous for its controversial First Lady, Eva Perón. Perón’s feminist approach to politics and civilization stirred hatred in some Argentines, and ignited passion and individuality in others. Today, the anniversary of Eva Perón’s death is marked by Argentines every year on July 26.

Argentina is the birthplace of tango-the forbidden dance. And because this Latina American country is as comfortable with its own citizens as it is with its visitors, it’s quite possible a local may offer to teach you. Travelers booking flights to Argentina simply need to show some foot work- either with a soccer ball or on the dance floor-and they’ll soon feel like one of the locals. Book a trip to Argentina to be seduced by its history, geography and culture.

Getting to and around Argentina

Buenos Aires:

Buenos Aires is the capital of Argentina and has the busiest airport. The Ezeiza Ministro Pistarini International Airport is the main one in use and is where you’ll no doubt fly into. It is a little over 13 miles away from the center of Buenos Aires and getting into town isn’t too difficult. It’s worth noting that there are no train or rail options available from the airport. There are, however, many private and public bus choices you can make. If you turn left after leaving the airport you should find the public buses with little trouble. They only operate from Terminal B. You’ll also need exact change so make sure you change some notes into coins. Manuel Tienda Leon is one of the main private bus companies. You can even arrange for a transfer directly to your hotel with them if you don’t mind paying. Finally, you can choose to hail a taxi. There are numerous taxi options. You can either find ones outside, pre-arrange one when you are securing your cheap flights to Argentina or take one from the Exeiza taxi desk inside of the airport.

Cordoba:

The airport is around 6 miles from the center of Cordoba. The transportation from here is lacking, though. Your best bet would be to try to arrange transport once you’ve secured your flight tickets to Argentina. It’s also worth seeing if your accommodation offers any kind of shuttle service. Failing that, there is a regular bus that goes to the center of town, but the drivers are prone to refusing passengers with too much luggage (just bear that in mind when you’re packing). Additionally, there is a minibus service, so if you do end up with a lot of luggage, you could opt for that.

Argentina’s domestic flight network is reliable and planes are the easiest way to get around if you’re covering long distances. Depending on the route, flights can be even cheaper than buses.

Long-distance buses are also a good option and are equipped with a toilet, air-conditioning and even a bar.

Driving is another option but can be expensive. Cars can be rented to adults over 21.

Tips for your stay in Argentina

  • Buenos Aires, Argentina’s bustling capital is the arrival point for travelers coming off Argentina flights. This fascinating city deserves a few days at least to watch a tango show or football match and eat enough steak for a lifetime.
  • If you happen to be visiting Buenos Aires on December 11 then you can’t miss the Tango Day that’s celebrated in honor of the legendary Carlos Gardel’s (“the King of Tango”) birthday. Stop by the Museo Casa Carlos Gardel, a museum containing memorabilia situated in his mother’s former home.
  • The spectacular Iguazu Falls is home to the Iguazu Park (Parque National del Iguazu). There are 270 individual waterfalls spanning over two miles of the Iguazu River. The steepest part of the falls is the Devil’s Throat which is reached by train from Central Station.
  • The two parks Talampaya and Ischigualasto can be easily accessed from the quaint town of San Agustín de Valle Fertil. The parks are famous for their distinctive redstone cliffs

Finding Flights from Argentina

Planning to continue the vacation after Argentina? Cheapflights can help you find great deals. The same airlines that fly direct to Argentina can also take you back to the United States, or you can move on to more international destinations.

Here are some popular routes flying out of Argentina, so you can see what kind of deals are out there:

While taxis are the most expensive way to get to the airport, they are also the fastest and most comfortable. City buses don’t cost much, but the ride could take an hour or two. If you’re flying out of an airport in Buenos Aires, arrive early, as they often get crowded.

  • What’s the weather like in Argentina?

Argentina is a big country, and the climate can vary widely. The north is subtropical while Patagonia in the south can be sub-Antarctic. The plains are usually mild and humid. The north is best visited between May and September while the opposite is true for Patagonia.

  • How long is the flight to Argentina?

Argentina’s two largest airports are in Buenos Aires. Expect flight times to Buenos Aires of about 11 hours from New York, 13 hours from Chicago and 15 hours from Los Angeles.

  • Which airlines fly to Argentina?

Catch a direct flight from the United States to Argentina on American Airlines, Delta or United. Non-U.S. carriers offering direct flights include Aerolineas Argentinas and LATAM Airlines Argentina. If you have an international departure point, look at flights with Copa and Lufthansa

  • What should you pack for a flight to Argentina?

Dress in Argentina tends to be on the more formal and conservative side. Jeans, slacks and long-sleeve shirts are all good choices for daily wear, and pack layers for visits during Argentina’s winter months, which are opposite of those in the States. Having the right shoes is essential in Argentina, specifically a pair of hiking boots and dancing shoes so you can tango.

  • What are some things to do in Argentina?

Argentina is the birthplace of tango, and you can learn the dance at the free Saturday and Sunday classes in Buenos Aires’ Barrancas de Belgrano park. Classes run from 4:30 to 6:30, and shortly after is a casual dance. If you’d prefer to dance indoors, head over to Club Gricel or Confiteria Ideal. Buenos Aires is a city rich in culture, and you can get a taste of its art at the Museo de Arte Latinoamericano de Buenos Aires. The museum always displays art by some of the country’s most famous artists, and has a rotation of work by international artists. Right on the border of Argentina and Brazil are the Iguazu Falls, the world’s largest waterfalls. Spend a night in Puerto Iguazu drinking some of Argentina’s amazing wines, and then set out the next day for the falls. The trek up isn’t too difficult, and while the falls may be the main attraction, there is plenty of other wildlife to see. They lie in the middle of a rain forest, and you could easily spend a whole day exploring. Of course, when you go to Argentina, you must see the Andes. Over 4,000 miles long and cutting through several countries, the Andes lie along the western edge of Argentina. May to September is ski season, so you may want to spend time at Bariloche Resort or one of the other skiing areas on the mountains. The Andean Lake District is great for fishing and hiking, and if you enjoy rock climbing, the Andes offers some of the best in the world.
