Senegal’s official currency is the West African CFA franc. One franc equals 100 centimes. You can find ATMs in Dakar, but banking facilities are very limited throughout the country. Communications

Senegal’s international country code is 221. To call another country, dial 00 followed by the appropriate country code. The telephone system in Senegal is one of Africa’s best and there are plenty of telephone centers that allow you to make international and local calls. Main cities usually have Internet cafes.

A service charge of 10 to 15 percent is often added to your hotel or restaurant bill. You don’t need to tip taxi drivers.

Safety

Street crime and pickpockets are common problems, especially in Dakar. Use common sense and keep valuables hidden. Avoid traveling by road in the Casamance region west of Kolda, where separatist rebel groups are known to frequent.

Health

You’ll need a yellow fever vaccination to enter the country. It’s a good idea to also get immunizations against polio, tetanus, typhoid and hepatitis A and B. If you’re traveling during November to May, you should also get a meningitis vaccination, as outbreaks occur during the dry season. Cholera outbreaks also occur, and avoid coming in contact with stagnant, fresh water, which carries a risk of bilharzias. Be careful what you eat and drink and stick to bottled water to avoid stomach troubles. Consult your doctor about preventing malaria, which is prevalent throughout the country. Dakar has good medical facilities, but they are limited throughout the rest of the country. Make sure you are covered by health insurance.

Electricity

Senegal’s electrical current is 220 volts AC, 50Hz and uses round, two-pinned plugs.
