Cheapflights - Book a cheap flight to Mauritius today.

The volcanic island of Mauritius is located east of Madagascar and about 1,250 miles off the African coast. Geographically the country is part of Africa, but book a flight to Mauritius and you’ll think you’ve landed in Martinique. The island is heavily influenced by British and French cultures and most of its workforce is of Indian descent. The island boasts grand adventure for travelers booking Mauritius flights and resorts.

Mauritius is almost entirely surrounded by coral reef and is bordered by three mountain ranges - the Black River Range, the Grand Port Range, and the Moka Range. Take a hike through the mountains and view some of the rarest birds and wildlife in Africa.

After a trek through the mountains and a lounge by the blue lagoons, take part in some of Mauritius’ culture. Enjoy the local food on the terrace of a French café, and sip wine while relaxing to the music that drifts through the streets. Make sure to introduce yourself to the locals. Often referred to as the friendliest and welcoming to tourists, immediately after arriving on your Mauritius flight you’ll feel like you’ve been here forever.

Mauritius Climate

Mauritius’ two seasons actually have very few differences. Summer, lasting from November to April, normally ranges between 90-95 degrees F, with humidity rising in December. Because it’s such a small island (approximately 25 miles in diameter) there’s constantly a coastal breeze, and even sometimes  three or four cyclones a year. If you book flights to Mauritius in the winter, temperatures drop just a few degrees, and the land is still splashed with sunshine and basking in sea temperatures between 75-80 degrees F.

When to Fly to Mauritius

Book flights to Mauritius for the winter holidays to celebrate in a relaxing new way.

Peak Season: Most travelers book flights to Mauritius between May and November because of the warm temperatures and lack of humidity. Snorkelers and divers especially love this time of year for the cool, calm waters and perfect underwater conditions.

Off-peak Season: Fortunately, even Mauritius’ off season is unfailingly wonderful. Despite the rare cyclone (which can bring heavy rains and drive locals indoors) each day on the island is another day in paradise. It’s hard to book cheap flights to Mauritius with much strategy in avoiding the cyclones, since they are so few and infrequent.

Getting Around Mauritius

Once your flight to Mauritius arrives, you’ll be itching to see the rest of the island, and with good reason. Its tiny land mass allows for visitors to see every nook and cranny if they’re serious about sightseeing.

Taxis in Port Louis and Grand Baie can be hired, hailed, and shared, and it’s common to negotiate the fare with the driver, since meters are rarely used. Be smart about your Mauritius travel by making sure you always have a map on you so you can gauge how far apart your destinations are. Beware of drivers advertising for future business: if you’re not careful, you could end up taking an entire island tour – and paying by the minute – so make it very clear that you’re not interested. Some taxis charge more at night, but not exorbitantly.

For budget minded travelers booking cheap flights to Mauritius, a bus network runs all over the island. It’s known to be painfully slow, but easy to figure out, and very reliable. If you’re going farther distances, stick to express buses (standard ones stop every block).

The following chart gives approximate journey times from Port Louis (in hours and minutes) to other major cities and towns in Mauritius.

Mauritius Insider Information

  • Undersea Adventures: For underwater adventurers booking flights to Mauritius, take a stroll on the ocean floor. Once you strap on your air-filled helmet, you’ll stride passed beautiful corals, exotic plant life, and tropical fish species. You can choose from either a 20-minute excursion, or an hour-long adventure 90 feet under the water’s surface. Once you’re back up to the shore, explore the exclusive restaurant that awaits you.
  • Port Louis: As you wander through windy boulevards passed basaltic rock houses with uniform blue doors, you’ve officially made it to Port Louis. Brimming with big business and small trades, this tiny little hub packs 150,000 inhabitants. Among the mix of culture and in between motorcycles, donkeys, and carts going in every which way, you absorb the flavor of the town, and you won’t board your return Mauritius flight the same person. Once a naval base for the French fleet, Port Louis now teems with shops, bars, and restaurants waiting to be explored. Try not to over-plan your visit, though – some say the best way to understand the city is merely to get lost in it.
  • Flacq market: If you’re in the mood to do a little souvenir shopping, then head straight to one of the largest open-air markets on the island, and be ready to use your best bargaining talents. Learn from the locals and keep a sense of humor – vendors want you help you, but also to make a profit, so keep their agenda in mind while negotiating. It’s tempting to buy everything in sight, but be sure to leave room in your suitcase for your return Mauritius flight.
  • Pamplemousse Botanical Garden: Few travelers booking flights to Mauritius would consider missing the gorgeous array of flora and fauna at the Pamplemousse Botanical garden. One of the most famous gardens in the world, it holds many rare species of plants and trees and takes more than two hours to cover. Somewhere between the floating lily pads on the pod, the palm trees, and the flowers, your Mauritius travel stands still. Its named after a citrus fruit called “pamplemoucier” that the Dutch brought from Holland, and now this garden is the only place in the world that still grows it.
