Managua is the capital of Nicaragua and the country’s largest city. At a first glance, this destination may appear to lack the usual charms that most top vacation destinations tend to exhibit. However, it’s deserving of a second look, as well as a visit. Aside from all of the events and festivals occurring throughout the year, Managua has many interesting places to visit and excellent tours to partake in. Laguna de Tiscapa is a volcanic lagoon, existing in the midst of both old and new Managua. Although the lagoon is heavily polluted, this site is still worth seeing. Lake Managua’s Malecon is a small-sized promenade that is home to a collection of local restaurants, situated alongside the shores. Here you can sample delicious local delights. The view of the river is sublime and locals like to dine here on weekends. The Managua City Sightseeing Tour, travels throughout the city, stopping at places of interest, like the Ruben Dario National Theater and the Palace of Culture. The Montibelli Reserva Privada, is a private reserve tropical forest, with various birds and numerous butterfly species to observe. This location is also popular with hikers. You can take a boat ride across Lake Nicaragua, lasting for 8 hours during which you’ll travel to 365 small tropical islands to observe and learn about their ecosystems.
November through to April are the best months to visit Managua, weather-wise. This period marks the dry season, which is conducive to outdoor activities, like hiking and sightseeing. Las Fiestas Patronales occurs in August and features horse shows, live music and parades. July is another exciting month, with celebrations of the victory of the Sandinista Revolution occurring. The INPYME crafts fair begins on the first half of December. There are various exhibitions and a vibrant 2-week carnival is hosted.
The New Year and Easter periods tend to be the most expensive times to travel to Managua. The 15 of September is the Independence Day and plenty of events occur during this time, with parades and fireworks. This period tends to be expensive for travel. The rainy season occurs during May to November and cheaper tickets may be available, due to weather conditions.
Licensed cabs are the preferred choice of travel for visitors. You can identify licensed cabs, by their red plates and driver ID notices, positioned above the dashboard. It is recommended you stick to licensed cabs and avoid pirate ones, which generally charge extortionate prices.
