Situated in the Aegean Sea close to the Turkish mainland, Kos Island is the third largest Dodecanese island. Green and fertile, it lies between Nisyros and Kalymnos.

Kos Town is the island’s capital, as well as an ancient port, and features plenty of bars and restaurants. The town is also studded with historic sites that reflect on the island’s past inhabitants – Egyptians, Romans, Venetians, Ottomans and the Knights of St. John. There are ruins of the Roman baths and amphitheater, and an enormous 15^th century castle built by the Knights of St. John still stands.

Kardamena Village on the south coast of the island, is one of the most popular resorts among British tourists.

Kefalos Village is quieter than other parts of Kos. Perched on a hillside, the village has a nice, long beach and serves up a relaxing experience to visitors. Despite its popularity, the village remains traditionally Greek with whitewashed houses and narrow alleys.

Kos enjoys a warm, sunny Mediterranean climate with long, hot summers and short, but rainy winters. Temperatures typically hover around 77 F June through September, and these are the warmest months in Kos. December through March usually feature temperatures between 53 F to 55 F and are the coolest months on the island.

In general, sunny weather lasts from May to October in Kos, while rain and lower temperatures settle in from November through March or April.

Peak season:

July and August are peak season in Kos and crowds (particularly beach-goers) will likely be plentiful during this time. These months are generally the hottest, most humid and the busiest.

Off season:

The off season typically runs from November to March, when the weather is cooler and can be wet. May, September and October are good months for a getaway to Kos as the weather is still fairly nice, but crowds are fewer.

Getting around Kos, Greece

Public transportation, taxis, cars, motorbikes and bikes are all feasible modes of transportation on the island. Buses and trains also run to and from various villages on the island. Ferries run between Kos and Turkey, and some of the other Dodecanese islands. Kos Island International Airport is located in the village of Antimachia, 13 miles southwest of Kos Town.

• Therma (Greek for “hot”) is located 5 miles from Kos Town center. Bathing in the hot waters – a natural whirlpool – is a relaxing experience.
• The Church of St. John the Baptist (Epta Bemata) dates from about the sixth century.
• Asklepeio was, in ancient times, a sanatorium and temple dedicated to the god Aesculapius, son of Apollo. It features four levels of superb Greek architecture.
• Excursions to neighboring islands such as Pserimos are popular and plentiful. There are also a number of daily sea crossings to nearby Turkey.
