Off the coast of Split, just 15 nautical miles from Baska Voda and accessible by ferry, is the island of Hvar, which abounds with Romanesque and Renaissance buildings and a true Mediterranean atmosphere. The island is noted for its fertile soil and was the site of the world’s first parcelling out of arable land by the ancient Greeks, who farmed there. It is now mainly a wine-growing area. The island’s main towns are Vrboska and Jelsa, famed for their Dalmatian wines, and it is dotted with picturesque villages.

• Hvar Town on the island of Hvar is attractive but pricey. To save money on accommodations, stay in private houses. These are handled by local agencies, or you can just turn up off the boat and go to the house of one of the many old ladies who arrive to look for custom. If you're doing the latter, make sure you ask to look at the room first.
• Hvar is the lavender capital of Croatia. If you are here in spring it is growing in the fields so get close to take in the scent of this all-round wonder plant.
• The beach is rocky so head to the Pakleni Islands by taxi-boat from the harbor.  Lying on the sand is part of a summer holiday, after all.
• Hvar harbor is full of yachts and also the place to come for nightlife. Bars and restaurants surround the harbor, though it is often difficult not to feel jealous of those sipping cocktails aboard their yacht. Be prepared for a long climb back to your accommodation - the harbor is much lower than the surrounding town, so wherever you have to head back to is invariably up a large number of steps.
