Visit the capital of the state of New York and put yourself right in the heart of things! Albany is home to elegant parks and gardens, innovative and contemporary museums, wonderful theatres, and so much more. This city was first settled by Europeans in 1614, and so it has a rich and fascinating history. Visit the New York State Museum and the New York State Archives to explore the many wonderful artifacts, art works, and documents that this city has been home to throughout the centuries. If you want a quick guide to places to visit in Albany, you can always look up its five accredited National Historic Landmarks. These include the Ten Broeck Mansion, for example, which is a federal style mansion that also houses a museum. One of Albany’s largest parks is Washington Park, and this is a delightful place for a picnic or a stroll. Each year, Washington Park is home to the Tulip Festival, which brings a real riot of color to the city and celebrates its Dutch heritage. Visit the bustling Empire State Plaza to take in the magnificent architecture and explore the many brilliant bars, restaurants, cafes, and other traditional American eateries dotted around this region of the city.
Visit during one of the city’s several annual festivals to make the most of a bustling atmosphere. The Tulip Festival occurs in early May every year and is often attended by in excess of 80, 000 people. The cheapest times to visit New York are usually during the winter, between January and March, when the weather is coldest. Albany does have a real romantic charm about it in the snow, though, so you can make the most of its relatively quiet feel during the winter months. In the summer, it comes alive thanks to the gorgeous warm weather, and is home to several mini film and literature festivals. Flights between the months of June and August, and especially during the school vacation, tend to be a little more expensive, but you can make this more than worth it by getting out and about in the open air.
This city has a great public bus network. The buses run throughout the week, though Sundays and public holidays tend to have a limited service. Traditional yellow taxi cabs are also in abundance.
