When is the best time to fly to Elmira?
Elmira has a humid continental climate which is defined by four seasons that include hot summers from May to September and cold winters with regular snowfall from December to February. The peak period coincides with the summer months of May to September and July temperature are generally around 28C with a rise in humidity. Flights are more expensive at this time of year as school and college holidays mean an influx of visitors who are attracted by the town's proximity to the Finger Lakes region.
A pleasant alternative to peak season is the shoulder season months of March to May when spring comes to Elmira and foliage begins to appear after the winter snows. It is mild, with temperatures of approximately 15C by April and flights to Elmira are less costly. The fall foliage also brings visitors to this scenic part of New York state, and from October through November you can take advantage of deals on shoulder season flights, and with temperatures still as high as 10C in November it is comfortable and mild.
Low season is from early December until the end of February when dropping temperatures and snowy conditions mean that the city is less busy. However, with the exception of the Christmas period, it is a great time to look for cheap flights to Elmira.
Elmira is in a scenic part of New York State known as the Southern Tier, and is close to the Pennsylvania state border. The town lies on the Chemung River and is also within easy reach of the Finger Lakes region where boating, water sports, fishing and nature watching are popular pursuits. The city is also a great base from which to explore the wonderful vineyards and wineries that are a feature of the Finger Lakes area.
The city itself has much to offer visitors, and it is known for Woodlawn National Cemetery where visitors can see the last resting place of famous American author Mark Twain. Other notable people who are buried at Woodlawn include Miles Davis, F.W. Woolworth, Irving Berlin and Duke Ellington.
Children will love spending the day at Harris Hill Amusements, where batting cages and go karts are just some of the things they can try. Adventurous types may enjoy taking a flight in a glider at Harris Hill Soaring Centre, or learning all about gliders and other aircraft at The National Soaring Museum.
Spend the day at Newtown Battlefield State Park or shopping in the city. There is something to appeal to all ages in Elmira, and whether you're a history fan, art lover or outdoor enthusiast there is always something exciting to see or do.

Local bus services cover all areas of the city, and there is also an excellent shuttle service for shoppers. You can also find local taxis who will charge you as set or metered fare for local journeys.
Getting from the Airport to the City
Elmira/Corning Regional Airport (ELM) is just 9 miles (14 km) from the centre of the city and there are regional flights from the main international airports in the area such as Syracuse Hancock International Airport (SYR) which is 95 miles (152 km) away. Getting into the city is easy and you will find taxis for hire outside the terminal as well as car rental outlets inside.
