Some places in India will always be inspiring, and Agra is one of those cities. Agra is home to one of the seven wonders of the world, multiple religious monuments and the birthplace of many Indian arts and philosophies. You might find a cheap flight to Agra, but your experience in this city will be rich.

Situated in the State of Uttar Pradesh, Agra offers visitors a chance to experience three world heritage monuments and a glimpse at India’s finest craftsmanship. From leather to glassware and jewelry to embroidery, visitors to Agra will savor in the various Indian arts. But Agra is more than a city of carpet weaving and artifacts.

Many visitors book flights to Agra on far more personal journeys. The Taj Mahal, Red Fort and Fatehpur Sikri are just three places that welcome travelers on the journey to another land. The most famous of them is undoubtedly the Taj Mahal. Built in 1648 C.E by the Muslim Emperor Shah Jahan in memory of his wife Mumtaz Mahal, the Taj Mahal remains today one of the most striking structures in the world. Built entirely of white marble, some say the Taj actually glows in the moonlight and looks like it’s floating on a foggy day.The perfectly symmetrical monument took 22 years to construct, and many travelers opt for flights to Agra to seek solace in the Taj Mahal’s peace pools and landscaped gardens. Whatever the reason for travel to Agra, visitors are sure to leave with lasting memories.

Agra Climate

Agra’s tropical climate brings 110 degree temperatures in June, and combined with the high rate of pollution in the city, most travelers book Agra flights as things cool down. June (and sometimes July) is also known for heavy rainfall and even monsoons. Chilly temperatures come in the winter, but range widely from 40-90 degrees F.

Getting Around Agra

Private tours around Agra are available, and the U.P. State Tourism Development Corporation provides tours that cover all the major sites.

Driving in cities in India is not recommended. Many visitors hire a car and driver by the day to get around, and taxis and rickshaws are another option. For taxis and rickshaws (both auto and bicycle), make sure to negotiate the fare before you get in. Haggle hard; Agra gets so many tourists that the drivers quote high prices. Also be aware that many drivers will stop at jewelers and other shops to earn a commission off anything that you buy. (Note that motorized vehicles are not allowed in the Taj Sanctuary in an effort to reduce air pollution.)

Bicycling is another way to get around, and there are many bicycle rental shops.

Agra Insider Information

  • Agra Fort: The Agra Fort is ared sand-stone fort constructed in 1565. It began as a military structure, transformed into a prison, and now stands as a palace. Each of its guises can be found in its workings, from the double walls, high and thick to keep out enemies, to the white marble added by Shah Jahan. The Amar Singh gate to the south is the sole entry point to the fort, and meant to deter attackers: Inside the gate, a crocodile-infested moat waits intruders. Despite the building’s scary introduction, domestic government workers, important dignitaries, and foreign representatives stay at the Agra Fort when they travel to Agra.
  • Taj Mahal: The Taj Mahal’s ancient story of love and loss has tempted people worldwide to book flights to Agra. When Emperor Shah Jahan’s wife, Mumtaz Mahal died giving birth to their son, it is said that Jahan’s hair turned gray with grief overnight. He built the luminous white structure in her memory, and it still stands, after restoration in the 20th century, as a beautiful structure of Indian history. Ironically, as Jahan’s son came to rule, he imprisoned his father just steps away in the Agra Fort with a view only big enough to see the white building that he once championed. If you’re interested in visiting, avoid the heat and crowds of mid-day, and go either at sunset or sunrise, when you’ll get the best photographs.
  • Tomb of Afzal Khan: If you’re intrigued by the romance and devastation of Shah Jahan, and ache to follow its continuation, make sure to add the tomb of Afzal Khan to your Agra travel agenda. Once a poet and a high official in the court of Shah Jahan, Khan was close to the emperor, and witnessed his perils. Built in 1628, his Persian-style tomb is situated on the riverside, hidden on the east bank of Yamuna. Painted bright blue on the outside, and decorated with floral designs on the inside, the monument is impressive in both aesthetics as well as history.
  • Yoga Tours: Welcome to the land where yoga originated. To strike a balance between physical health, mental harmony, and cultural appreciation, book a two-week yoga tour to center yourself and enjoy the benefits of yoga in cities like Delhi, Haridwar, Rishikesh, Shivpuri, and Jaipur. Obviously stopping in Agra, you’ll be able to snack on a light breakfast before a sunrise yoga session near the Taj Mahal. Sink your heels into the mat and let your surroundings overtake your senses. Tours include yoga sessions, local transportation, and hotel accommodations – all you have to do is book your flight to Agra.
