Airport Overview

Shannon Airport (SNN) is the third-busiest airport in Ireland (after Dublin and Cork), currently seeing almost 2 million passengers a year. Flights to Shannon Airport arrive from across the UK, as well as from a few key hubs elsewhere in Europe and the US. The five busiest routes include those to the three London airports (Heathrow, Gatwick, and Stansted), as well as Newark and JFK in the US.

Shannon Airport was the first airport in the world to offer full US pre-clearance outside of the Americas. However, changes to flights offered in recent years has seen a dramatic (almost 40 percent) drop in annual passengers. The airport has few facilities and is not as busy as it used to be, but staff members are friendly and your experience of this efficient little airport should be a good one.

Terminal Transfer

This is a small airport with just one terminal.

Getting into Town

Train: There’s no train station at the airport or in the town of Shannon.

Bus: The long-distance service Bus Eireann connects Shannon to major cities in the country, with a trip to Dublin costing €15 (or €20 or more return), depending on the day of the week. JJ Kavanagh & Sons provide a service between Shannon Airport, Dublin Airport and Limerick.

Car Parking

There are both long- and short-term car parks at the airport. The short-term car parks are directly in front of the terminal building and cost €1.50 for the first 15 minutes, €3 for the first hour, then €2-3 an hour up to a daily maximum of €20. The long-term car parks cost €9.50 a day or €47.50 a week.

Information Desks

There’s a general airport information desk and a tourist information desk in the arrivals section.

Airport Facilities

Money and communications: ATMs and currency exchange are available.

Luggage: There are left-luggage facilities in the arrivals section, which will cost you €3-7 per day or €15-35 per week, depending on the size of the item. The lost property desk (in the link corridor) will charge an administration fee of €5 if you pick up something there. If you’ve lots of bags, consider using the porter service in the arrivals area (6am to 11pm) – it’ll cost you a minimum of €6, or €1 per bag.

Conference and business: The Rineanna Suite lounge is free to First-Class travelers on Continental Airlines, Aer Lingus Gold Circle members, Priority Pass and Airport Angel cardholders. Otherwise it’ll cost €25 per person for three hours. The lounge has all the usual comforts – complimentary snacks, drinks and newspapers, TV, a business center with workstations and free Internet, and showers.

Other facilities: There’s a post box and a chapel in the terminal.

Wi-Fi: Free Wi-Fi is available throughout the terminal, and the WJH Smith has 24-hour coin- or credit card-operated internet kiosks.

Glen Aran Irish Markets sell rugs, wool items and jewelry and WH Smith stocks books and newspapers, while the Londis Shop provides a general range of confectionery, food, gifts, magazines, books and accessories.

Food and drink: There are a couple of coffee shops stocking sandwiches and snacks, as well as two sit-down restaurants. The Sheridan Food Pub in the departure area is open 24 hours a day but is only open to passengers, while the Marsh Bar overlooks the check-in area and serves a range of drinks and hot meals.
