In a post- 9/11 world where security is constantly being reevaluated, an emphasis on speed is surely an issue to get attention. We’ve told you about mobile-check in before, but now it’s even more popular.

Recent research shows that not only is mobile check-in a green travel initiative, but it’s a money and time saver for the airlines and airports. Now, more and more airports and airlines are joining the trend and integrating mobile-check in to their daily repertoire.

Airline counters are typically jammed with individuals checking in, those counters might be better off dealing just with checked baggage, says USA Today. Self service kiosks have been moved further from the terminal so that lines are divided and spread, eliciting less congestion and a more efficient through-way process. Some kiosks are even placed in car-rental areas, hotel lobbies, and outdoors.

Airlines are thrilled because fewer kiosks (at $10,000 a piece) mean less labor costs, and airlines support the initiative because they’ll save on construction and decrease lines and confusion.

Highly-visited airports in the country already use mobile check-in. New York’s La Guardia, Memphis’  International Airport, and Las Vegas’ McCarran International Airport in Vegas are just a few of the heavy hitters.
