A new traffic control tower at Chicago O’Hare will increase safety and cut delays.
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has granted the airport $4.3 million of funding for the construction of the tower, which will help to speed up completion of the ongoing project.
As part of the O’Hare Modernization Program, work has already started on the North Air Traffic Control Tower, with the FAA deal meaning it will be complete in time for the new runway in November.
Mayor Richard Daley attended a press conference alongside U.S. Senator Durbin to announce the 20-year agreement between O’Hare and the FAA.
Durbin told the Chicago Sun-Times: “This agreement is good for the FAA, good for the City of Chicago and good for our nation’s air travelers.
“We now have a state-of-the-art air traffic control tower as part of a modernization project that will help reduce delays and congestion while increasing safety and capacity.”
The O’Hare Modernization Program includes plans to reconfigure runways to increase capacity and reduce weather-related delays, as well as proposals to add extra airline gates with a new western terminal building.
