Officials at Los Angeles International (LAX) are hoping to test a new runway safety system that is already being trialled at San Diego and Dallas/Fort Worth.

It is hoped the warning light signal system will be in operation at the airport before the end of the year, following a long application process.

Lights are embedded into the tarmac and use a radar system to detect other planes which then warns pilots of potential collisions with aircraft on neighboring runways.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has yet to introduce the runway status lights at LAX, though officials there have been seeking approval to trial the system since 2006, reports the Los Angeles Times.

According to the newspaper, LAX has had the highest number of near-collisions on its runways since 2000. LAX is expected to pay $5 million to install the lights and test the radar system.
