The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has revealed that it will be working with Syracuse-based lighting firm Sensis to install a new runway safety system at 22 airports.

Runway Status Lights (RWSL) are designed to warn pilots of potential incursions and will be embedded into runway tarmac.

Sensis will work with Siemens USA and HNTB Corporation to install the red lights at some of the nation’s busiest airports including Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International, Washington Dulles International and New York JFK.

Tony Lo Brutto, Vice-President and General Manager of Sensis Air Traffic Systems, said: “Sensis has drawn on more than a decade of airport surveillance and conflict prediction and alerting technology advancements as well as over 80 deployments around the world to deliver a complete runway status light solution.”

Robert A Sturgell, Acting Administrator at the FAA, added: “These lights are designed with the pilot in mind. It’s a big step for safety on the runway. We’re expecting to see positive results right from the start.”
